Although Quakers throughout most of their history and in most parts of the world today consider Quakerism to be a Christian movement, some Friends (principally in the select Meetings in the United States and the United Kingdom) now consider themselves universalist, agnostic, atheist, or pagan, or do not accept any religious label.
Quakerism is often termed a mystical religion because of its emphasis on the personal experience of God rather than logic and reasoned theology.
Quakers hold a strong sense of spiritual egalitarianism, including a belief in the spiritual equality of the sexes—which was remarkable for the mid-1600s.
