 | | All trainees seeking to qualify as a teacher, from 1 May 2001 onwards, will need to pass all three skills tests in numeracy, literacy, and ICT before they can be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), register with the General Teaching Council (GTC), and begin their induction period. |
 | | The Union believes that the qualified teacher status skills test are unnecessary given the current entry requirement to initial teacher training courses and the standards for the award of qualified teacher status, as set out in 'Qualifying to Teach: Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status and Requirements for Initial Teachers in Training'. |
 | | While there are advantages in teachers learning how to apply their existing mathematical skills to the analysis of statistical data relating to schools, or their literacy skills to reporting to parents, the NUT believes that any deficits in these skills should be built into the teacher training courses themselves. |
