Quang Tri Town, at that time the Province capital, and Dong Ha Town were both destroyed.
After the war ended in 1975, the government and the people of Quang Tri Province slowly began to return and attempt to rebuild from the devastation of war.
Accidents occur while children are walking to and from school or the market; farmers plowing the soil and planting crops; workers digging a well or laying a foundation for a building; scrap metal collectors attempting to dismantle a bomb or shell and sell it on the market for a small amount of cash.

Quang Trí lies near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), an area that separated North and South Vietnam after Vietnam was partitioned at the end of the First Indochina War in 1954.
The people of Quang Trí are poor, in large part because many farmers cannot use their land for fear of uncleared land mines.
During the Vietnam War Quang Tri was the site of several fierce battles, in particular the Easter Offensive of 1972.

 Quang Tri Falls
With the fall of Quang Tri, capital of the province of the same name, a threat became more imminent to the old imperial capital of Hue, now only 24 miles south of the northernmost defensive line of the South Vietnamese on Highway 1.
It was a significant attack because Highway 1, already blocked south of besieged Quang Tri City, is the main overland supply route from Da Nang to the northern front.

The refugees had an opportunity to flee Quang Tri as South Vietnamese troops recaptured parts of the province where they were living.
In early May, NVA soldiers in many villages told civilians that Quang Tri and Thua Thien, the province of which Hue is the capital, had already been captured, and that Da Nang, 60 miles south of Hue, would soon be taken.
Refugees from Quang Tri are first taken to a reception center at a village north of Hue, then to camps several miles from the city.

Quang Tri City was the provincial capital for the northernmost province of South Vietnam.
Upon completion of the occupation of the city, it would occupy the whole city, allowing the remainder of the regiment to redeploy in a crescent formation on the southern side of Quang Tri to block Vietnamese Army and U.S. forces that were expected to come in as reinforcements from the vicinity of Hue.
As the 814th Viet Cong Battalion attacked Quang Tri from the northeast, it was decisively engaged by the 9th Airborne Battalion and was unable to enter the city.
