Quantization (image processing) - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Quantization techniques generally compress by compressing a range of values to a single quantum value.
Although more frequent in the past, nowadays color quantization with pallets of lower than 256 colours is mainly used in GIF and PNG images.
A common quantization algorithm is the Octree-based algorithm, as described in the MSDN article on ASP.NET color quantization.

Articles - Quantization (signal processing)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
In digital signal processing, quantization is the process of approximating a continuous range of values (or a very large set of possible discrete values) by a relatively-small set of discrete symbols or integer values.
The simplest and best-known form of quantization is referred to as scalar quantization, since it operates on scalar (as opposed to multi-dimensional vector) input data.
In many cases, quantization can be viewed as the fundamental element that distinguishes lossy data compression from lossless data compression, and the use of quantization is nearly always motivated by the need to reduce the amount of data needed to represent a signal.

Aleksandra Mojsilovic: Color Quantization   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Color quantization is sampling of three dimensional color spaces (such as RGB or Lab), which results in a discrete subset of colors known as a color codebook or palette.
Methods for processing gray-scale images cannot be simply extended to color images because they rely on the fact that each gray-level is described by a single number and the fact that a relation of full order can be easily established on the set of those numbers.
We illustrate possible processing of color images by first introducing the basic average and difference operators and then implementing edge detection and compression of color quantized images.
