Quartertone guitars and mandolins, as well as other fretted instruments, have been made, and of course the Hawaiian steel guitar is admirably suited to quartertones, provided the player can be persuaded to avoid that annoying eternal glissando and be compelled to proceed by definite scale-steps instead!
Halving the semitone into the quartertone is thus a logical move; furthermore, it will still be possible to play all semitonal music on any quartertone instrument without the slightest alteration whatever.
Unless a composer really has something to say in quartertones, he should keep to the conventional scale and not burden the musical world with mere experiments in which quartertones are tacked onto conventional musical cliches.

There are many other customizations in addition to the quartertone frets...the instrument has 6 played strings tuned primarily in fifths, from a contrabass Eb to eb (like a guitar’s high string).
The best way to approach quartertone fretting is to first concentrate on ignoring the additional frets and getting smooth execution in a variety of playing situations.
Quartertone slides have a vocal quality, as the added notes mimic the fluidity of natural systems.

Quartertone pianos usually consist of two standard pianos placed one on top of another, so the ordinary twelve-tone keyboard is and remains standard.
Quartertone performance on violins and other bowed-string instruments is simply a matter of 'reprogramming,' to use the currently-fashionable computerese jargon.
The eleventh harmonic, which misses an exact quartertone point by one one-thousandth of an octave, is of course attenuated in normal piano tones by the heavy felting of the hammers and the relatively thick strings of the modern piano.

In these figures, the variability of spectral intensities are plotted as shaded areas on log-proportional scales along the vertical axes as a function of frequency (horizontal axis).
Regarded as a function of frequency, the width of the shaded area is for the most part constant and apparently independent of the actual intensity values.
Thus, a simple linear transvection (which shifts the spectrum as a whole) is automatically used to compensate for differences in mean vocal pitch of a speaker.

FRANK J. A lot of the concerns that you have as a composer and as a musical thinker are very near and dear to my own musical interests: the whole notion of microtonality as a direction for music, working with electronics, vocal music, new approaches to opera… Let's start by talking a bit about microtonality.
Believe it or not, I think it was George Avakian who said to me once that he thought the microtonal approach was the one that held the greatest potential for the future, because it makes the greatest challenge to performers, composers and listeners.
In the first piece the quartertones seem mostly ornamental and the second piece is really just playing off the fact that there are 2 pianos tuned a quartertone apart.

I used a quartertone scale as the basic framework since it relates to the chromatic scale we all know and can hear easily.
From the quartertone, single and double arrows are used to define pitches that are slightly higher or lower (single arrow) or almost a quartertone higher or lower (double arrow).
Using the chromatic scale as a basis and then subdividing it into quartertones and finer intervals enables the musician to relate these pitches to the system we in the West normally hear -- the chromatic scale.

While Middle Eastern musicians (specially in Arab and Persian music) themselves often speak in terms of quartertones, and notate their music as such, it is universally understood to be only a matter of convenience.
Before exploring the actual mathematical value of the intervals in the music of the Middle east, we need to become familiar with a few basic concepts.
Another concept that is useful in understanding the theoretical basis of Middle Eastern music is to stop thinking of “octaves” in the Western sense.

However, I have to correct that a little bit by saying that some of the quartertones, unfortunately, some of those fingerings change the color substantially of woodwind instruments.
Also, there aren't nearly all of them — a few quartertones which are just not, which are just really difficult to get.

The motivations have been to secure smoother conventional chords, hence just intonation or that close imitation, 53-tone; or to get restful major thirds, hence meantone or 31-tone or one of the numerous 'unequal' or incomplete systems.
The motivations for quartertone and some other systems have been to enlarge the vocabulary without having to scrap 12 tone, and similar obvious reasons.
I knew nothing then about 19-tone and its mood, and since you can only play two sustained tones at a time on a bowed instrument, I did not hear sustained just triads or tetrads for quite some years to come.
