In American football, a quarterback sack occurs when the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage before he can advance the football.
If the quarterback is able to advance the ball to at least the line of scrimmage prior to being tackled, it is not counted as a sack.
Among the NFL football players known for their ability to sack the quarterback are Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Kevin Greene, John Randle, Lawrence Taylor and Michael Strahan.

ESPN.com: GEN - The record doesn't matter; the legitmacy does
In this era of hyper-charged statistical noodling of all sorts, there are so many numbers flying around that Strahan's 22½ sacks don't necessarily resonate with the viewing public; most people already knew he was a fine bull-rusher and didn't need to see Mark Gastineau's 17-year-old sack record fall to affirm it.
And that would be fine, had Strahan not been given 15 previous NFL games (and nearly all of the 16th game) to lock down that one extra sack he needed to get past Gastineau's mark of 22.
While Favre was busy afterward insisting that he had switched his call from run to bootleg at the line of scrimmage, not a single member of his offensive line was supporting the notion.

A JockBio Exclusive — Anatomy of a Sack by Simeon Rice
It’s hard as a shit to get a sack if it’s not your “specialty,” and it’s still very hard even if it is. The handful of players who have been able to put up double-figure sack numbers year after year really are a breed apart, and I’m proud to be one of them.
There are sacks that represent game-changing plays, and there are sacks at junk time, when the game has long since been decided.
The quarterback dumps the ball, he makes an unexpected move, he breaks your tackle, or maybe you just don’t close the way you should.

For example, Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber had 5 1/2 sacks two seasons ago, Packers safety LeRoy Butler retired with 20 1/2 sacks, Chargers safety Rodney Harrison has 19 1/2 career sacks to his credit, and Patriots safeties Lawyer Milloy and Tebucky Jones got to the quarterback a combined four times last year.
Three of the corner sacks and three of the safety sacks were picked up in Week 5, which could be a sign that defensive coordinators are beginning to find ways to get to the QB from all the spread formations seen around the league.
During the 2000 season, one out of every seven sacks resulted in a fumble, one in every 18 forced the QB to leave the game, and a sack lowered the chance of an offensive possession ending in a touchdown by 30 percent.
