 Nonlinear Optics
A second technique for achieving phase matching in nonlinear optics is to modulate the nonlinearity periodically in one dimension. The resulting grating can be used to compensate for the wave vector mismatch in a way that is called quasi-phase matching(QPM).
The common technique that is used to satisfy the phase-matching condition take advantage of the natural birefringence of anisotropic crystals, but it remains quite a stringent condition.
It should also be emphasized that many of the effects observed in nonlinear optics, such as the Raman scattering, were observed much earlier in the microwave range.

This implies the existence of a Bogoliubov dispersion relation for the low-lying elementary excitations of the photon fluid, and in particular, that sound waves exist for long-wavelength, low-frequency disturbances of this fluid.

Characterisation of nonlinear conversion and crystal quality in Nd- and Yb-doped YAB
By imaging the nonlinear conversion using a CCD camera we observe phase matching characteristics similar to that obtained in quasi-phase-matched crystals.
Variable crystal quality affects the laser performance of many self-frequency doubling crystals, particularly those of the yttrium aluminum borate family.
In this report we characterize nonlinear frequency conversion in Yb:YAB and demonstrate a simple non-destructive technique for measuring crystal quality.

 SC153.aspx
Quasi-phase matching (QPM) is emerging as a dominant technology for nonlinear optical frequency conversion in the visible and near-IR.
Smith is the author over 100 journal and conference papers in the area of QPM materials, and is the founder of Stratophase Ltd., a start-up company in the UK, that is commercialising periodically poled QPM materials.
The commercial and scientific uses of QPM devices will be reviewed, and, finally, the market potential of QPM devices will be discussed.

 The Lasers and Lidar Group
KTP can be periodically poled for the quasi-phase matching and the pump, signal, and idler fields intensities can be kept large over the interaction length through waveguide confinement.
However, the doubly resonant cavity configuration is not stable and is difficult to tune.
Using a singly resonant cavity will alleviate these problems, but the lasing threshold for the parametric oscillator becomes to high to be pumped with diode lasers.

Waveguide fabrication using organic nonlinear optical materials
By periodical alternating combination of the waveguide with that of UV-cured epoxy resin which has the same refractive index as that of the bis-azo-dye attached polymer, a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) waveguide was fabricated.
To solve a problem of the crystal, i.e., the crystal with water is inactive for second-order optical nonlinearity, a specific photo-process was proposed and a ridge waveguide was fabricated using the photo-process combined with a reactive ion etching.
Organic and polymeric waveguides with optical nonlinearity will be discussed which include electro-optic polymer waveguides and an organic crystal waveguide.
