Quatermass and the Pit is a 1967 British science-fiction / horror film, produced by the famous Hammer company and based on the 1958 BBC Television serial of the same name.
In contrast to Donlevy, Keir's performance as Quatermass has been very well-received down the years, and the film is generally felt to be the most faithful of the three cinematic adaptations, although it was not as commercially successful as its predecessors.
Quatermass and the Pit was the last Quatermass movie to be produced by Hammer, although after its release Kneale did pitch a storyline to the company for a further film written directly for the cinema.

Savant Review: Quatermass and the Pit
Quatermass and the Pit, Hammer Film's third adventure featuring the Bernard Quatermass character, is front-rank science fiction overflowing with ambitious concepts.
In a London subway excavation are found humanoid fossils and a buried emerald rocketship that logically lead Quatermass (Andrew Keir of Dracula, Prince of Darkness and Rob Roy) into an expanding circle of phenomena: Unexploded bombs, Nazi propaganda weapons, Poltergeist-style occultism, alien invasion, genetic manipulation, and demonic possession.
Soon Quatermass finds himself battling government and military bureaucrats over his theories about the mystery ship, which prove to be too disturbing for public acceptance: human evolution may be the result of the intervention of ancient alien visitors.

 Quatermass and the Pit
Instead, ‘Quatermass and the Pit' identifies itself within the sci-fi/horror boundaries and the structure of the scientific aspects to the story is rooted firmly in mankind's desire to substantiate and attest to its own existence while offering a theatrical explanation for those supernatural occurrences that have besieged history yet remain startlingly inexplicable.
However, it would be somewhat ludicrous to suggest that ‘Quatermass and the Pit' has accurately realised the truth behind humanity; instead it has given itself a base and a reality.
When considering the movie within the confines of itself and accepting the story as just a story, ‘Quatermass and the Pit' has successfully been able to attain its own veracity and this is the reason why the film is able to become great.

Comment: Quatermass and the Pit is a genuinely great screenplay, one of the smartest sci-fi films ever written because it deals with interesting ideas rather than stock effects.
This is spite of the material being harder than diamonds, incredibly resistant to heat (even Quatermass seems to miss the fact that it absorbs heat, which should have been a warning), the intact buildings overhead, the unlikelyhood of something buried that deep ever being found (how did it get there??) and so forth.
