Notes for Quatrain by David Dzubay
Quatrain features the violin section of the orchestra, which is divided into four parts.
Perhaps the most obvious quote is of the cadence from the cadenza of the Mendelssohn violin concerto, which is used at the end of the third section.
The fourth quote is the central quatrain of the composition - Happy Birthday (to Josef Gingold and to Indiana University), of which each of four phrases are contained in the corresponding four sections.

 SparkNotes: Shakespeare's Sonnets: Sonnet 60
In the third quatrain, time is depicted as a ravaging monster, which halts youthful flourish, digs wrinkles in the brow of beauty, gobbles up nature's beauties, and mows down with his scythe everything that stands.
In the third quatrain, the metaphor becomes one of time as a personified force, a ravaging monster, who digs trenches in beauty, devours nature, and mows down all that stands with his scythe.
Each quatrain is a single four-line sentence, developing a single argument through metaphor: time passes relentlessly, human life is cripplingly short before it quickly succumbs to age and decay, time is the ravager responsible for the downfall of men's lives.

While the first quatrain is flowing, by the first two words of the second quatrain, “anon permit,” we have entered a sequence of three lines that feels in comparison like wading through muck.
The first two lines of quatrain three return to the smooth round sound of the first quatrain, and the imagery is again of an early dawn with bright sun on the speaker’s forehead.
The second quatrain modifies this description: the speaker is in fact describing his experience of many beautiful sunrises that have then been hidden behind thick clouds for the rest of the day.

Each quatrain begins by reiterating a variation on the title “When I Have Fears”, and in each first line continues by referring to or directly addressing the goal or object he fears leaving in an incomplete state.
The second quatrain draws focus to his second fear, which I believe could be interpreted as either the loss of ability to explore the wonders of nature upon death, or, in a slightly more esoteric gesture, referring to his unending quest for knowledge and fascination with learning.
In his third quatrain, Keats breaks away from his usual pattern of passing reference to an object or idea; instead he directly addresses someone, (I’m assuming a lover), who he terms “...fair creature of an hour” (9), suggesting transience.

Although the majority of the quatrains are obscure and vague, there are several which are frighteningly close to actual events that later took place.
This quatrain has been interpreted to refer to either Napoleon or Hitler who were both born into poor families in Western Europe, both enticed many people with their speeches and both had great reputations in the East (Japan allied with Hitler and Napoleon's rise was due greatly to his success in Egypt).
Although some of his quatrains do seem to closely resemble actual events, one must remember the broad interpretations that are given to his vague "prophecies." People want to believe that futures can be told and this is why the media like to promote Nostradamus and exaggerate his so-called abilities.

An example of an introverted quatrain is the In Memoriam stanza (named for the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson), which has an abba rhyme scheme.
With the masnavi the rhymed couplet, it is a purely Persian poetic genre and not a borrowing from the Arabic, as were the formal ode (qasdahi) and the love lyric (ghazal).

The Richard Vallance Sonnet Review, September 2002 - C.S. Snow's Quatrain LONGEVITY
Quatrains exhibit several poetic and stylistic elements and conventions in common with sonnets.
Iambic tetrameter or pentameter is a hallmark of quatrains, and while the pentameter is more commonly employed in the sonnet, the use of the tetrameter is not exceptional, as illustrated by Walter de la Mare’s splendid sonnet, "Silver".
It would be well nigh impossible philosophically to grasp with empathy this transcendent quatrain C.S. Snow has written in such a remarkably imaged framework, unless you were to take the trouble to read a number of his other poems.
