THE HIGH HAT | POPS&CLICKS: Out of Time
My intention in these essays is to discuss the concert music of the 20th century in terms of its sound as music, and to show how the 101 essential pieces, in all their diversity, relate to each other and to the everyday lives of people in the 21st century.
The entire sixth movement, “Danse de la fureur, pour les sept trompettes” (“Dance of Fury, for the Seven Trumpets”) is in rhythmic and melodic unison (or octaves, which function as unisons).
The Quatuor’s structure is as unusual as its instrumentation; according to Rischin, a 1938 Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano written in 1938 was the only known piece for this particular combination, and Messiaen did not know of it.

For example, he shows a passage from the sixth movement ("Danse de la fureur") as a derivation of the opening bars of "L'Ange aux parfums" from *Les corps glorieux* (1939), highlighting motives identical in contour and rhythm, although different in mode and tempo.
He discusses the theological issues underlying the *Quatuor pour la fin du Temps,* an integral part of the quartet's expression, and explains (p.

The record is in the very highest class, the players meeting every demand the composer makes upon them and the fine, clear EMI record gives the group striking presence while affording proper background ambience.
One thing conspicuous by its absence from this score is Messiaen's beloved birdsong effects, but music lovers bored with Holst's Jupiter may find, as I do, the Joie du sang des etoiles something more to their taste.

There, during the winter of 1940–41, he completed the Quatuor pour la fin du temps for himself to play with a violinist, a cellist and a clarinettist he had found among his fellow inmates.
It was his most ambitious work so far, a sequence of eight movements in which ‘the end of time’ – meaning the end of orderly progressive time – is conveyed sometimes by non-developing textures of ostinatos, sometimes by very slow music, sometimes by sudden interruptions, sometimes by dances in irregular rhythm.
The first performance took place at the camp, before a huge audience of prisoners in the depth of winter.

Messiaen played the piano part at this first performance, but as the prison piano was missing several keys, he was forced to adapt the piece to a somewhat unusual tonal scale.
The Quatuor is written without a definitive rhythmic or tonal scheme which is why some consider it a “difficult” piece.
However, while clearly containing complex elements, Quatuor pour la fin du temps is an ethereal composition which, like most of Messiaen’s work, has its roots in religious writing.
