The Autoroute system in the province of Quebec Canada is a network of freeways which operate under the same principle controlled-access as the Interstate freeway system in the United States or the 400-Series Highways in neighbouring Ontario.
Quebec's Autoroutes are numbered from 1-99 the case of principal routes and from in the case of collector routes or routes designed such that truck traffic can urban areas.
Quebec's first Autoroute was the Laurentian Autoroute Autoroute des Laurentides) which opened in 1959 as a toll road.

Highway 40 begins at the Ontario-Quebec border where it continues as Highway 417 towards Ottawa, and ends in Boischatel where it transitions into Highway 138 at the end of the freeway.
The portion of Highway 40 from the Ontario border to the Highway 25 interchange is part of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The section between Berthierville and the Quebec City was built mostly from the mid-1970's to mid-1980's, after the Repentigny-to-Berthierville toll section already had been built.
Actually, this part of A-40 was intended as a spur route (A-755); it was re-designated in 1992.

Two sections of A-40 were not part of the original plans: The original intention was to bypass Trois-Rivières to the north (the existing A-40 through downtown would have been Autoroute 755 and the multiplex with Autoroute 55 would have only been A-55).
The portion of Autoroute 40 from the Ontario border to the Autoroute 25 interchange is part of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Trans-Canada (Autoroute 20) will also get you there, but it goes on the south shore, and is a bit longer (also pretty boring).
If you're going to Quebec City, going Autoroute 40 will add a lot of travel time, compared to 20, because you need to fight Montreal traffic into, through, and out of the city.
Similarly, coming back you could take Autoroutes 40, 30 and 15, crossing into the US at Rouses Point NY and making your way to Burlington from there.

It's an easy walk from downtown(along the port of Quebec footpath, which is patrolled by security 24/7, very safe) and the cabbies all know where it is, the bus also stops there.
The only thing missing in this league is a "natural rival" for Quebec and that would be Trois Rivieres who also have one of the last grand old ball parks of the North East.
Now that the Montreal Expos are moving to RFK Stadium, baseball fans in Quebec will now discover what a true ballpark is. All seats are located between first and third bases, with a old-stadium feel that I could compare to Fenway Park - on a smaller scale, of course.
