The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton will visit more than 500 Australian communities and be carried by 3500 relay runners in the final 50 days of its epic journey from Buckingham Palace to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay commenced from Buckingham Palace on 14 March 2005 with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passing the baton to Australian icon, supermodel and businesswoman, Elle Macpherson — the first of many thousands of relay runners to carry the baton across the globe.
The Australian leg of the Queens’ Baton Relay is funded by the Australian Government and is a joint initiative of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation, and the relay’s Presenting Partner, Telstra; Tourism Partner, Tourism Australia, and sponsors, National Australia Bank and Qantas.

The Queen’s Baton, which is on an epic journey and traverse in about 71 Commonwealth countries, was in Malawi before arriving at Lusaka International Airport last night aboard South African Airways.
The relay will start this morning with an official ceremony at the embassy park to be officiated by Mwape, who will pass on the Baton to members of the diplomatic corps, ministers and other dignitaries.
The Queen’s Baton relay has been an integral part of the Commonwealth Games programme for almost 50 years, since the first games were staged in Cardiff, Wales in 1958.

The Queens Baton Relay has finally arrived in Australia after 316 days of travelling through 71 countries as it makes its way towards the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony at the MCG in Melbourne on the 15th of March.
The Queens Baton Relay departed of Saint Peter Port in Guernsey and after the 722km trek arrived on the 31st of March before heading 1499kms south to Gibralta and arriving on the 3rd of April.
New Dehli, India had the Queens Baton Relay arrive on the 13th of September after its 679km journey before heading on to Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1,426km away on the 17th in the second half of the global journey.

The baton was snatched as Wrexham runner Daniel Wilkinson passed through the town of Connah's Quay, in North Wales, on Saturday afternoon.
Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle said "One of the people in the crowd came out and grabbed the baton but security guards were there immediately and the runner was fine," she said.

The Baton, which was greeted at the Nestle Visitors’ Centre by over 200 staff, athletes and visitors, began its tour through Canberra at the AIS in recognition of the important role the AIS plays, not just in the development of Australia’s elite sportspeople, but of its significance to Canberra and its community.
Petria Thomas had the honour of carrying the Baton into the AIS reception where it was received by ASC chairman Peter Bartels.
