The part of Queens County that was not annexed to New York City, consisting of the towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay and all of the Town of Hempstead except the Rockaway Peninsula, was constituted as the new Nassau County in 1899.
Queens is connected to the Bronx by three bridges: the Bronx Whitestone Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge and the Triborough Bridge.
Queens is connected to Manhattan by two bridges and one tunnel: the Triborough Bridge, the Queensboro Bridge, and the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

Nassau and Suffolk counties are generally referred to as "Long Island" (as distinct from New York City) by area residents, although the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn (Kings County) make up the island's westernmost counties.
As of 2004, Nassau County is the richest county per capita in the State of New York and the sixth richest in the nation with a median household income of $78,762.
Nassau County has also experienced heavy urbanization in many areas, such as Hempstead, Mineola, and Westbury, leading some to say that some parts of the county resemble the outer boroughs of New York City rather than a suburb of it.

Nassau Hall was, at the time of its completion in 1756, the largest stone building in the colonies.
The trustees originally voted that ``the College be built of Brick if good Brick can be made at Princeton and if sand can be got reasonably cheap,'' but they later changed their plans and ``the College'' was built of a light brown sandstone from a nearby quarry.
For many years, the Nassau Hall bell was rung with a rope pulled by a campus policeman or, in the hour-long ringing after a football victory in New Haven or Cambridge, by freshmen and, at least on one occasion, by a dean, whose signature, Christian Gauss, appeared on the wall among the other bell ringers'.

Patricia Hamilton Gyi became enmeshed in the College’s early struggle with civil rights issues when she was invited to pledge Beloit’s Alpha Mu chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority in 1962; within weeks the chapter was placed on probation by its national body for reasons that were seen as hiding the true issue: racial discrimination.
She is currently an assistant professor of psychology at Vassar College and teaches classes in the multi-disciplinary programs of urban studies and Africana studies.
