Stroheim was commissioned to write and direct Queen Kelly and the script was passed by the Hays Office.
Finally I myself directed a sort of patched-up last scene (the Prince discovers Kelly's drowned corpse and kills himself) to tie up the story and it was shown a little in Europe and South America, in places where they didn't yet have talking apparatus and that was that.
This shows Kelly and the rich aunt in the brothel in Africa with a bespectacled Negro priest giving the last sacrament as whores snigger; and also Kelly's marriage, with a mosquito net for a veil, to the old degenerate.

Because Queen Kelly was a vanity project, a prestige product for an actress who'd recently become an independent producer; it was financed by her lover Joseph Kennedy, bootlegger, father of JFK, and the man who saved the company that would become RKO, even if he didn't know the first thing about movies.
Kelly was to have been an actress's tour-de-force, in which Swanson would have to master all styles from comedy to tragedy, all emotions from love to degradation.
Kelly herself makes the connection between the two worlds when, cracking under the emotional pressure of the ghastly wedding ceremony, she replaces in hallucination the priest with the supplicating Wolfram, again opening up extraordinary thematic possibilities never to be explored.

Queen Kelly tells the story of a young convent girl who meets Prince Wolfram von Hohenberg Falsenstein the consort of the mad Queen Regina V of Kronberg.
Kelly quickly learns that ‘missionary’ was just a front for ‘whorehouse’ and that she is now in the clutches of wicked people.
By now she is the ruling Madame, known as Queen Kelly because of her regal arrogance (Alas, no actual film survives of Gloria in her whore get-up, only a few stills).

Swanson plays the title character, a poor waif whose love affair with a dallying prince earns her the wrath of the princess (who, in the most famous scene, whips Kelly before throwing her out of the palace) and personal struggles in the African jungle.
Side Note: Years later, Swanson made her comeback in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950) as a vain former silent movie star and was able to convince director Billy Wilder to cast von Stroheim in the role of her character's former director turned chauffeur.

Fortunately, Queen Kelly was shot in sequence, so the first seventy minutes or so is a coherent and well balanced bit of outrageous social hysteria.
Set in a fictitious European kingdom of some sort, the events concern the pending engagement of mad Queen Seena Owen with the less than willing aristocratic playboy Walter Bryon, who prefers riding carriage horses to the hoots and hollers of female courtiers who bet their underwear on the outcome of the race.
While the Queen strolls around her palace naked (strategically covered by well-placed objects, bits of scenery and a long-haired white cat), her eyes burning with paranoia and jealousy, Bryon encounters a young (Irish) convent girl (Swanson) with whom he falls instantly in love.

Welcome to the Best of New Orleans! Film Review 06 17 03
Von Stroheim wrote and directed Queen Kelly, a story about an engaged prince who falls for a feisty orphaned teen (Swanson), but Swanson had von Stroheim replaced -- with only a third of the film shot -- once the bills started piling up and the schedule overruns began.
Queen Kelly was all but the directing end for von Stroheim, who wound up back in Europe -- France, to be exact -- where he became hailed as a genius and found numerous acting jobs.
(The same year Queen Kelly fell apart, he starred as a delusional ventriloquist in The Great Gabbo, in a performance that predates Anthony Hopkins' eerie turn in 1978's Magic.) One of his earliest post-directing roles was a widely acclaimed turn as Captain von Rauffenstein in Jean Renoir's The Grand Illusion.

In 1928, after years of struggles within the studio system, Erich von Stroheim found the opportunity to create his crowning achievement: a storybook romance of intoxicating beauty, counterbalanced with a frightfully grim tale of moral corruption.
Gloria Swanson stars as an innocent convent girl who falls under the spell of a handsome prince (Walter Byron) on the eve of his marriage to a diabolical queen (Seena Owen).
Queen Kelly might have been one of von Stroheim's greatest films had actress/producer Swanson not halted it in mid-production.

 Queen Kelly : Video
One of the most audacious in jokes in the history of American movies occurs in Billy Wilder´s Sunset Boulevard when Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) shows Joe Gillis (William Holden) a silent film being projected by her onetime director-husband and now butler, Max von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim).
The great silent film QUEEN KELLY, is Swanson´s most popular film, aside from SUNSET BOULEVARD.
Financed by Joseph Kennedy, Stroheim was hired by his old friend Gloria Swanson, but when talkies came in and it was apparant there would never be a market for a silent Swanson vehicle, production stopped and the film was unreleased for decades.

It was after shooting had started that Von Stroheim filled Swanson in on the rest of the plot: Kitty was to inherit all the worldly possessions of her aunt in German East Africa.
Despite its tawdry plot, Queen Kelly was beautifully photographed; its most famous shot, of Swanson praying in church, her face framed by flickering candles, was excerpted in the actress' much-later talkie Sunset Boulevard.

An excellent example of the value of film restoration, Queen Kelly is one of Eric von Stroheim's production debacles, originally planned as a five-hour epic, and had it been completed it would have been as false and pretentious as it was grandiose.
It concludes with the prince's fiancée, the queen, chasing Swanson down the long hallways of the palace with a whip.
In the second major sequence, Swanson's character inherits a brothel in German East Africa and is forced to marry an icky pimp.

It was produced by Swanson herself and financed by Joseph Kennedy, who was then her lover.
Despite Swanson's firing of him, she and von Stroheim were not enemies, and 22 years later the two were reunited in Billy Wilder's masterpiece "Sunset Boulevard," in which they played roles very similar to their real personas -- and in which a clip from "Queen Kelly" appears.
