Queenborough is a small town on the Isle of Sheppey in the Swale borough of Kent in South East England.
During this period, Queenborough, on the Isle of Sheppey was an important town for the export of wool, a significant crown revenue.
The economy of Queenborough was boosted significantly by the establishment of a branch line from Sittingbourne by the South-Eastern and Chatham Railway which operated in conjunction with a mail and passenger service by steamer to Flushing in the Netherlands.

The first copperas factory in England was established at Queenborough in 1579, by Matthias Falconer, of Brabant.
A fortress, called Sheppey Castle, is said to have existed from an early period for guarding the passage of the Swale river.
Queenborough Castle was built about 1361 by Edward III., who named the town after Queen Philippa and made it a free borough, with a governing body of a mayor and two bailiffs.

Queenborough, or Quinborowe, is in the liberty of the isle of Sheppey, in the lathe of Scray, 45½ miles from London, by a road branching from the Dover road eight miles beyond Chatham, and leading into the Isle by King's Ferry over the West Swale.
Queenborough (anciently Cyningburg) belonged to the Saxon kings, who had a castle here, on the site of which Edward III commenced a new and more extensive fortress.
Queenborough is a poor place ; the greater part of the inhabitants are dependent on the oyster fishery ; a few of them possess boats of their own.

Queenborough is situated on the Isle of Sheppey, at the confluence of the Rivers Medway and Swale in Kent, and despite a long history with many famous connections, it is little known due to its close proximity to Sheerness.
In 1667 Queenborough surrendered to a raid by the Dutch.
Queenborough became a continental ferry port in 1876 when a branch was built to a new pier from just north of the station.

Thus established, Queenborough prospered, until with increased competition from more readily accessible ports, such as Rochester, Chatham and the developing naval port of Sheerness, the town began to decline.
More recently, in 1967, a proper and more dignified Hand over was amicably arranged: The Queenborough Brielle twinning arrangement was created and Sheppey residents regularly and cheerfully invaded by their Dutch friends and visitors and in return are also welcomed in Holland.

Queenborough Pier was to provide a rail link to the existing local line joining it between Queenborough and Sheerness.
Queenborough Pier was of a "T" construction and extended sufficiently far into the Swale that the paddle steamers could use it at any state of tide.
Queenborough Pier was damaged by fire on 18th May 1882 and the Flushing service was temporarily operated from Dover.

Her title, Lady Queenborough, is often misspelt "Queensborough" and sometimes referred to as a pen-name or pseudonym.
Assuming that the only available picture of Lady Queenborough was taken in 1924 when her second of three children was less than a year old, it is a portrait of a women in her mid-thirties and therefore she was probably born in or around 1890.

Following a very successful Burns Night it was up with the sparrows (unless you were moored in Chatham) and out on to the river by 7 am.
Between 9 and 11 (the latter being in Chatham) 15 yachts set off for Queenborough and I am pleased to say that all that I saw were under sail.
On arrival at Queenborough the panic started to set in due to the jetty being broken the night before and 3 divers just about to go into to the water to recover a prop.

Thank God this was only for a short while until we turned into the Swale and came surfing in on it until sheltered.
The Queenborough Yacht Club pontoon mooring only had one yacht on it and he had been helpful enough to moor right at the end.
