Queensboro Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is also called the "59th Street Bridge", a name popularized by the Simon and Garfunkel song "The 59th St. Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", because it enters Manhattan at that street.
Serious proposals for a bridge linking Manhattan to Long Island City were first made as early as 1838 and attempts to finance such a bridge were made by a private company beginning in 1867.
Construction soon began but it would take until 1909 for the bridge to be completed due to delays from the collapse of an incomplete span during a windstorm and from labor unrest (including an attempt to dynamite one span).

Abandoned Stations : Queensborough Bridge Railway terminal
The Queensborough Bridge is a cantilever bridge designed by Gustav Lindenthal in 1903 for the City of New York.
At the Manhattan bridge terminal was an underground loop terminal of five tracks located on the east side of 2 Ave between 59 St and 60 St. The corresponding Queens terminal was a loop of three tracks on the street surface in the bridge plaza on the west side of Jackson Ave (Northern Boulevard).
The first streetcar service on the bridge was a shuttle of trolley cars started in October 1909 from the underground terminal to the street plaza at the Queens end of the bridge, probably operated by the New York and Queens County Railway.

At 1345, the tug was passing under the Knight Street Bridge; the skipper had the con while the deck-hand was in the wheel-house with his back to the tow.
The boom of the crane struck the span of the Knight Street Bridge because the air draft of the tow was not ascertained prior to commencing the tow.

There were 235 applications from people who sought to be the first to jump from the bridge — 168 from professional bridge jumpers, 34 from inventors with devices to test, 9 would-be suicides and 24 unemployed men who thought the gesture would improve their chances of work.
The bridge design provided for two decks, the upper with two outside footwalks and an interior double rail line to connect with the Second Avenue elevated, the lower with a vehicle roadway and four trolley tracks, including a special shuttle line that, in Manhattan, made a loop under the bridge's plaza on Second Avenue.

Most spectators of the Brooklyn Bridge probably fail to distinguish the anchorage, which is an integral part of the structure, from the approaches of which the purpose is simply to give access to it.

Of these five, the Queensborough, Manhattan, and Triborough Bridges were all constructed within a three decade period when traffic across the East River was becoming overwhelmingly heavy -- jumping 20 folds from 4.5 million crossings in 1910 to 90 million crossings in 1936, and it continued to rise thereafter.
Over one-third, or 36 million, were handled by the Queensborough Bridge alone, which is the only bridge within the 5-mile stretch between the Triborough and Williamsburg Bridges.
The Queensborough Bridge poorly distributed traffic because its approach areas were inadequate to handle the capacity, and as a consequence contributed to heavy congestion that interfered with traffic of the vicinity.

 Queensboro Bridge (NY 25)
"The structure of the bridge itself is an intricate mass of interlacing steelwork, seemingly incapable of architectural beauty because of the strict requirement imposed by the structural conditions in the design of compression and tension members.
The two suspension bridges were to be linked by a cantilever bridge with a main span of 500 feet.
Two independent consultants stated that while the bridge design was not faulty, they did raise concerns about the overuse of steel and the lack of testing of compression members.

The top chord of many truss bridges, such as the Queensborough bridge and the Jacques Cartier bridge, is curved, though the Forth bridge and the Quebec use straight chords.
In the case of the Forth bridge, which is narrower at the top than the bottom, (no doubt in response to the collapse of the Tay bridge) the support of the railway track is not simple.
Many cantilever bridges have the entire lower chord aligned with the deck, which has the added advantage that the entire span has a high clearance for shipping, if need be.
