Queensland Transport develops rail policy advice and is the lead agency through which the Queensland Government contracts for the provision of rail services and infrastructure to enhance transport solutions for Queensland.
The department holds the perpetual lease over all rail corridor land in Queensland (about 9550 kilometres) and therefore is the custodian and protector of the corridor's integrity now and into the future.
Queensland Transport also holds disused railway corridors to preserve them in case they are required for a future transport use.

Following a 48-hour statewide rail strike Queensland Rail (QR) has agreed to the inclusion of a special clause in railworkers' enterprise agreement that permits further wage rises during the period of the agreement to take into consideration the consequences of the GST on workers' cost of living.
Rail operations across Queensland — including metropolitan services and coal trains — were shut down during the strike.
QR said it was not prepared to agree to the inclusion of any provision in the agreement that was designed to protect workers' wages from the impact of a significant increase in inflation as a result of the GST, interest rate rises or the movement in other commodity prices such as petrol.

For the second day in a row trains throughout Queensland are at a standstill with unions defying a return to work order in a dispute over a 12 per cent pay claim.
Queensland Rail has notified the Commission that the talks have broken down, and is requesting an urgent arbitration hearing.
For example in the last three years agreement, Queensland rail workers were given 9.5 per cent for the three year period whilst our counterparts in the state government were given 12 per cent.

Rail unions continue to discuss changes that QR management believe are necessary to obtain government approval before balloting any proposed Trackside Systems agreement before the federal industrial relations changes take effect during March 2005.
