A not so brilliant commander.(A Very Brilliant Affair: The Battle of Queenston Heights, 1812)(Book review) - ...   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Robert Malcomson's A Very Brilliant Affair-the Battle of Queenston Heights is a very readable account of an episode in Canadian history that has not been the subject of much in the way of published works.
In this instance, during the initial defence of Queenston, a local commander ordered the infantry force protecting the heights to leave their post and aid the defenders of the town.
The book is a very good historical examination of the war, which leaves the reader to ponder the effects the battle had on the American way of war and what affect it had on the conduct of the US Army in the years leading up to the American Civil War.

Early Canada Historical Narratives -- SHEAFFE & QUEENSTON HEIGHTS
General Sheaffe had gained access to the heights unseen by the Americans who were astounded and taken completely by surprise at the sudden appearance of the red wave of British and Canadian soldiers with bayonets gleaming in the bright October sunlight.
The Americans were stranded on the Heights with their backs to the river, the Queenston defenders on their right and Norton's warriors and Sheaffe's forces fast approaching from the front.
For many years the only marker that mentioned Sheaffe's name in the extended area of Queenston was a small stone located a mile and a half west of Queenston on the south side of York Road where the British troops led by Sheaffe ascended the Heights and then moved eastward to confront the Americans.

ipedia.com: Battle of Queenston Heights Article   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Battle of Queenston Heights was a battle of the War of 1812 on October 13, 1812 between the Americans led by Stephen Van Rensselaer and the British led by Isaac Brock and Roger Sheaffe.
The Americans under van Rensselaer launched the attack on the Queenston Heights at 3:00 in the morning, by crossing the Niagara River in a group of boats that proved too few to serve the needs of the large American invading force, and too small to carry artillery across the river.
However, the greatest loss of the battle for the British could not be measured in numbers, as the death of General Brock and his replacement by more cautious generals such as Sheaffe and Henry Proctor would have a noticeable influence on the conduct of the war by the British.
