Patterson led Division 5 out of Boston Harbor 21 May 1917 and made rendezvous with Maumee the morning of 28 May. She was the first destroyer to maneuver alongside Maumee to receive fuel oil enabling her to complete the Atlantic crossing.
Patterson began patrol and escort in the approaches to Queenstown 5 June 1917.
A collision with His Majesty's tug Dreadful at the entrance to Berehaven Harbor, Ireland, the night of 1 January 1918, damaged Patterson's bow but she resumed regular escort and patrol 5 February.

Almost all of my families emigrated from Cobh (pronounced "Cove"), County Cork, Ireland, boarding two or three-masted steamships and sailing for roughly two weeks to either New York City or Boston, depending upon weather and speed.
For most of the Irish emigration period, Cobh was known as Queenstown, named in 1849 to honor Queen Victoria's visit to Ireland; however, Queenstown reverted to Cobh following Irish Independence in 1920.
Not only was Queenstown the last Irish soil beneath my ancestors' feet, but it was the last port of call for the RMS Titanic in 1912.

She reported for duty with the United States Naval Forces operating in European waters and was assigned to convoy escort duty in the approaches to the British Isles, basing her operations from Queenstown.
She steamed from France with the Queenstown division of destroyers on 29 November 1918 and stood out from Brest Harbor on 12 December to escort President Woodrow Wilson on board George Washington into the harbor.
Returning to Queenstown on 14 December, she sailed for home on the 26th and arrived at the New York Navy Yard on 7 January 1919.

Continuing the saga of Titanic as I was able to experience it, our tour wandered around various memorable sites all over Ireland and arrived in Queenstown to meet the rest of the short tour, which included Don Lynch, The Kamuta's, and others I recognized from the Titanic list groups.
Queenstown, now named Cobh (pronounced 'Cove') is essentially Cork harbor.
It's small so all the sights are in easy walking distance, and it's incredible picturesque.
