Queenstown Road railway station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queenstown Road is a railway station in Battersea, South London, between Vauxhall and Clapham Junction.
The entrance to the station still bears the original name of the station Queens Road, not to be confused Queens Road Peckham or Queensway tube station, that was also originally called Queens Road.
The station is a short walk from Battersea Park station and Battersea Park itself.

 Queenstown
It is completed, operates part way and will open for the full journey soon, travelling along the path of the original railway line - that transported copper ore from Queenstown to Strahan to be shipped out to the world.
QUEENSTOWN used to be promoted vigorously by the Tasmanian tourist board during the 1970s, when its famous (although now infamous) “lunar landscape” was seen as a major attraction and the people of Queenstown claimed to be proud of their bare hills.
Queenstown may not always be a destination in itself, but there are things to see for anyone who would like to pause on the way through.

 Walkabout - Queenstown
Queenstown, its hills stripped of timber to fire the local copper smelters and permanently denuded by the noisome sulphurous fumes which belch from the smelters, is a surreal nightmare.
Located 6 km from Queenstown (ask at Lyell Tours for directions) it was the original mining settlement being established in 1881 by miners and growing rapidly with the discovery of Iron Blow.
Three years later a railway from Strahan (it is located on the coast 41 km away) was completed and in 1901 the Empire Hotel, which still stands, was completed.

 Labour in Wandsworth - Queenstown
Queenstown covers the entire north-east of the borough, a huge ward geographically, carved-up by railway lines: all trains leaving Victoria and Waterloo stations travel through Queenstown on their way elsewhere.
There is, if you like, middle ground in the centre of the ward in the area known as the diamond - through which runs Queenstown Road itself.
Queenstown voters have always backed Labour MPs in their general election battles and in 2002 the ward fulfilled expectations that it would be the most closely fought in Battersea, with the Conservatives scraping home by less than 100 votes.

Chapter 5: The Railway Age, 1874-1920
The Queensland Railways were not really deficient until exposed to the stress of the Pacific War between 1941 and 1945, when it became clear that their light standards were as inadequate for the defence of the country as they were for intense economic development.
The new railways carried goods and passengers far more economically than the coaches and drays they replaced, but the difference in speed was not as dramatic as it had been in the wilder terrain of the eastern colonies.
However, such had been the confusion of railway policy in the colony, that, as a state in the new Commonwealth, its railways would be rebuilt and their uses redefined far more than was the case elsewhere in Australia.
