The latest population projections estimate the Queenstown Lakes district is likely to grow to between 23,700 and 34,000 people by 2021, while at the other end of the scale Invercargill city could slip to between 39,000 and 49,100 in the same period.
Statistics New Zealand estimates the Queenstown Lakes district is now home to 22,200 people, up from 17,850 in 2001, while Central Otago's population has risen to 15,050, from 14,750 in 2001.
Southland District Mayor Frana Cardno was sceptical about the figures, saying you only needed to look at the number of housing subdivisons being developed in the district to see things were in growth mode.
