 Kingsway Tunnel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kingsway Tunnel is a tunnel under the River Mersey in Merseyside in the north west of England, between Liverpool and Wallasey.
It was built between 1966 and 1971 when the Queensway Tunnel between Liverpool and Birkenhead was no longer sufficient to cope with the traffic.
FM radio reception for all major stations is available throughout the length of the tunnel.

In the 1920s, there were concerns about the long queues of cars and lorries at the (Click link for more info and facts about Mersey Ferry) Mersey Ferry terminal, and in 1925, the construction of the first Mersey Tunnel started to a design by Herbert Rouse.
The tunnel was opened on July 18, 1934 by King (King of Great Britain and Ireland and emperor of India from 1910 to 1936; gave up his German title in 1917 during World War I (1865-1936)) George V and Queen Mary in honour of whom the tunnel is named.
Originally it was planned to run electric (A wheeled vehicle that runs on rails and is propelled by electricity) trams through it, but it was used to house a gas pipe which was later abandoned.

The Municipal Committee chose the tunnel and the people of Merseyside went to the polls on 6 and 7 May 1925 to vote on whether there should be a tunnel.

The Mersey tunnels are in no sense unique as tunnels but they do endlessly have to re­visit the question of escape routes, the position of the Fire Brigade for reaching the scene of a fire, the problems of fumes in tunnels which could hinder escape and rescue as well as fire fighting.
A replacement of the fire main in the Queensway Tunnel has been commissioned, additional cross­tube escape passageways have been provided in the Kingsway Tunnel, work is now underway on devising improved new escape ways in the Queensway Tunnel, making use of the space in the large invert under the carriageways.
I can see the point that Mersey Tunnel are leading to is that there are vital works that need to be carried out and that is one of the reasons why I am curious to know who funded this report that is central to Merseytravel's case, that expensive monies need to be spent on infrastructure.

As the national anthem played and the curtains began to rise, few were aware that the electrical mechanism had failed and instead two men were stationed either side, raising the curtains with hand cranks.
The Royal car led the way through the tunnel to Birkenhead, where three miles of crowds awaited their arrival, clambering on roof tops and hanging on to chimneys to obtain a better viewpoint.
In the days that followed, the tunnel turned into something of a tourist attraction, with crowds watching the steady flow of traffic travelling between Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Mott supervised the construction in association with John Brodie, who, as City Engineer of Liverpool, had co-ordinated the feasibility studies made by Sir Maurice FitzMaurice and Mott.
The tunnel entrances, toll booths and ventilation building exteriors were designed by architect Herbert James Rowse, who is frequently but incorrectly credited with the whole civil engineering project.

Three tunnels in England –; the Tyne Tunnel, and the two Mersey Tunnels – were among 25 looked at by experts on major European routes in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and Germany.
The operators of the Dartford Tunnel, which carries 150,000 vehicles a day and is the busiest in Europe, refused to allow the inspection, along with the operators of four Italian tunnels.
Among the recommendations made by the inspectors were for all tunnels in Europe were for the installation of improved ventilation systems, and for escape chambers or rescue rooms, and lay-bys or emergency lanes, to be installed.

THE Queensway Birkenhead tunnel banned traffic and opened its lanes for the public to enjoy a unique experience on Sunday with the under-river walk in aid of North West Cancer Research.
The second time the Queensway tunnel has been open to the public, it was an enjoyable walk but certainly different.
Walking through the 'old tunnel' at a brisk pace took me about 30 minutes and it does seem longer than 2.1 miles, although this impression probably has something do with the bends and the climb compared with the straight 1.75 mile Kingsway tunnel from Wallasey to Liverpool.
