Topic: Queer Bashing

Gay bashing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gay bashing is an expression used to designate verbal confrontation with, denigration of, or physical violence against people thought to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT) because of their apparent sexual orientation or gender identity.
Similar terms like "lesbian bashing" or "queer bashing" may also be formed.
A "bashing" may be a specific incident, or one could also use the verb "to bash" e.g.

 Trikone Magazine: Free Excerpts
Gay bashing is often thought of as a public, visible event, that happens to "obviously" gay subjects such as effeminate men or butchy women.
In my experience with different queer communities in the Bay Area and in England, I have seen two violent women in a relationship both claiming to be battered, not to mention a case where a queer woman was the batterer in one relationship, and battered in another.
It also radically rewrites the space of the domestic, queers it, because it rethinks the structure of the family, the function of a house, and the kinship patterns that are normally assumed to fit into that house.

 How Do You Mean "Queer"?
By the fifties, "queer" was known widely and was an insult and epithet used by fag-bashers everywhere, which is well within the memory of those folks still alive today who were at the forefront of the Gay Liberation Movement twenty years later.
Because many felt that the gay community had come to be dominated by middle-class, gay white men, the word queer came to be used by those who wished to contradict that power elite and envision a radically inclusive group of folks across all genders, classes, races, ages and sexual practices.
In our own meeting there is a heterosexual woman who has spoken movingly of how she identifies as queer and treasures the queer presence at Northside because she believes another kind of meeting would not recognize and respect her romantic and sexual history as well as queer folks do.

QUEER BASHING IN VANCOUVER. A PROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Queer bashing was defined as physical abuse - including being hit, punched or beaten up - directed at you because you are gay, bi or transgendered or because someone thought you were.
Compared to those not bashed, MSM previously bashed reported significantly higher levels of depression (p=0.009) and were more likely to be Aboriginal (18% vs 9%, p=0.03), sexually abused as children (38% vs 15%, p=0.001) and involved in sex trade during the previous year (30% vs 14%, p=0.001).
The relative risk (RR) of being bashed was strongly and inversely related to age: compared to men in the oldest age quartile, the RR was 2.9 (95% CI 0.9-9.5, p=0.09), 4.1 (1.3-13.8, p=0.02), and 5.5 (1.8-16.9, p=0.003), in declining age quartiles, respectively.

Queers, it is argued, have too many sexual partners, cannot commit to meaningful relationships, cannot partake in what is considered to be a model of the traditional family.
Those who attack queers are never on the defensive-indeed, their own behaviors, their own "morality," their own mental health as those things relate to their sexuality are never up for question, scrutiny, or judgment.

Queer adults, made complacent by the crumbs of "social acceptance" grudgingly thrown our way, are all too happy to forget the complexity of our own adolescences and to neglect the needs of the next generation.
Queer adults should be at the forefront of the movements toward that freedom, contributing to a supportive environment in which teenagers exercise absolute control over their own sexual and reproductive choices.
Queer adults should join forces with those who are working to provide teenagers free access to nationally- and fully-funded safe sex education, condom/latex distribution, abortion, birth control.

It’s true that attacks on queer kids—as well as on kids who are perceived to be queer because of their gender affect, cultural interests, or social attitudes—are epidemic in public schools.
Several recent studies show that homophobic attacks on queer kids are less about maintaining the social pecking order or expressing “hate” toward outsider groups and far more about reflecting social and religious prejudice and moral judgment.
It is important to understand that the unremitting, often violent attacks on queer kids in and outside of schools are not simply teasing or bullying, but rather a pervasive, and mostly unchecked, manifestation of queer hating that has as its— unarticulated—goal the banishment of visible queerness.

The cry of "Catholic bashing" functions the same way; it is not about stopping anti-Catholic prejudice as it is about silencing those who would criticize or fight against the enactment of a conservative Catholic/Christian political agenda in public life.
To call them "bashing" is to grossly misrepresent the reality of what is happening here which is the claiming of a quick and easy "victim status" to promote a conservative agenda.
And using the accusation of "Catholic bashing" to silence opinions counter to Catholic belief is not defending religious freedom, but suppressing free expression and subverting what we generally call democracy.

Queer people often maintain a healthier balance between their masculine and feminine sides than straight people do, therefore they have a rare opportunity to stand more easily in tune with themselves and the universe.
Native American cultures have long recognized this; queers in their communities held special positions and were often considered powerful with magic because of their two-spirit nature.
As queers, we might be fired from jobs, have our kids taken away from us, be evicted from or denied housing, be kept from visiting our loved ones when they're in hospital, we might verbally abused, driven to suicide, or beaten to death because of whom we love and fuck.

Mobilizing a variety of theoretical approaches from queer, feminist, postcolonial and critical race theory, this dissertation examines the various ways in which contemporary queer cultural production in Canada interrogates and intervenes in discourses of nation, citizenship and the construction of the public sphere.
Particularly when issues of racial, ethnic or indigenous identity are broached in conjunction with sexually dissident identities, questions of queer alterity serve both to problematize and to interrogate the ways in which it is possible to think about what it means to call Canada home.
I conclude by arguing that it is in the very disjuncture between competing discourses of Canada’s queerness and its heteronormativity that it is possible to assert queerly Canadian ontologies and epistemologies as public knowledges and ways of being that are always contingent and uncertain — and always urgently necessary.
