Queer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queer is still used to mean 'strange or 'unusual' in many contexts, and in some areas its modern usage must clearly be indicated by the context for it to be understood with its newer meaning.
For example, 'He's a queer fellow,' would ostensibly be a statement that the man is a bit odd, but the subtext was that the speaker believed him to be gay (however this is not to say that, in transitional or even in contemporary usage, there always exists such a subtext whenever the word is used).
This is the meaning of 'queer' most closely associated with the academic field known as queer theory, a field that looks to margins of the sexual spectrum to explore and deconstruct societal understandings of fixed sexual identities, and of identities and categories in general.

 Why Queer Studies at Wesleyan?
Situated within cultural theory, Queer Studies is an important area of intellectual inquiry, one that produces not just critical reasoning and analysis, but creative thinking and expression and familiarity with processes through which knowledge is createdÑall of which qualify as the "critical capabilities" and ethical reasoning identified as priorities of Wesleyan's curriculum.
Queer Studies is an interdisciplinary field and is related to, but emphatically not congruent with, an exploration of gender, ethnicity, race and class in society.
Rather, we ask for Queer Studies for the sole reason that any study and investigation of the world at large is incomplete and insufficient insofar as it ignores sexuality as a major element of the exchange of power, the investment of meaning, and a tool for the organization of societies across the world.

Gender studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Gender studies is a theoretical work in the social sciences or humanities that focuses on issues of sex and gender in language and society, and often addresses related issues including racial and ethnic oppression, postcolonial societies, and globalization.
Work in gender studies is often associated with work in feminist theory, queer studies, and other theoretical aspects of cultural studies.
While work in gender studies is principally found in humanities departments and publications (in areas such as English literature and other literary studies), it is also found in social-scientific areas such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology.

Mari Ruti, a lecturer on women’s studies who is also serving on the committee established by Epps and Love, says the women’s studies committee needs to define the relationship between women’s studies and the new queer studies committee, so that the two committees reinforce—and not detract from—each other.
Ruti also emphasizes that while women’s studies and queer studies both address some of the same issues, they are separate disciplines and ought to be treated as such.

Some assert that the advantage of preferring "queer" is economy: it replaces the clumsy adjectival pair "lesbian and gay," as the plural "queers" supplants the binomial "lesbians and gay men." Yet this usage involves a possibly arbitrary limitation of the inclusiveness some prize in the expression.
Queer Studies and Queer Activism are, as was noticed at the outset, big news on campus, whatever their other limitations.
The pioneers of the study of homosexual behavior and culture realized that the humanistic heritage, primarily involving the interpretation of written documents (with classical scholarship at its center), could be fruitfully joined with the new empirical findings of sex research.

 On Global Queering
There is a history to be written of the way in which 'queer studies' emerged in the American academy in the early 1990s, the bastard child of the gay and lesbian movement and postmodern literary theory, which, like other unwed mothers, has been very loathe to acknowledge the father.
In several cities, gay and lesbian history study groups were established (their impact is seen in works such as Kennedy and Davis's history of Buffalo lesbians and Alan Berube's account of the impact of World War II on the formation of gay/lesbian communities.
Indeed, there is a basic confusion around 'queer', which is sometimes used to describe a particular way of being homosexual, perhaps expanded to include bisexual desires and unorthodox gender behaviour, and sometimes meant to represent the whole gamut of opposition to the sex/gender order, so that lesbian prostitutes and heterosexual, suburban sado-masochists are equally 'queer'.

Indeed, lesbian and gay studies can be charted along much the same trajectory as Women's, African-American, Asian-American or Latino/a Ethnic Studies, all of which were institutionalized (however tenuously in these times of "down-sizing" colleges) at historically specific moments at the conjuncture of their respective (and overlapping) political activism, cultural production, and scholarship.
Indeed, lesbian/gay studies shares more with these other emergent subdisciplines than a certain path toward discursive legitimation within the academy (though this is not to suggest that the struggles of every field of study have all been identical).
My emphasis here on popular cultural productions should not indicate that queer studies traffics exclusively in the popular (though the intersection of queer and popular is an intriguing one), as any study of homoclassics or anthrodrag surely indicates.

[KS] Korean Queer Studies Forum: A Call to Convene
Outside of the media, academic debate about queer issues at Korea‘s universities still remains something of a taboo, carried on largely by a few underground intellectuals who are forced to talk about non-normative gender and sexuality through already marginalized programs such as women’s studies.
Although queer groups now exist on Korean university campuses, pressures to conform to prescriptive notions of sexuality require that they carry out many of their activities in anonymity.
The following call for the creation of a Korean Queer Studies Forum is informed by this situation ?that is, the perceived absence of a critical intellectual discussion on issues of importance to the queer communities of South Korea, in spite of their relevance to the contemporary situation both in and outside of the peninsula.

The neighbor insists that the success of their ploy relies on François changing precisely nothing about his appearance: that is, he is not to act “gay.” Viewers are initially and positively surprised, judging that one needn’t be effeminate to be gay.
Those in the audience who had first perceived François as a refreshing take on such misgivings of the gay “mystique” in its portrayal of human sexuality as a multifarious phenomenon are left disappointed as the other characters work to perpetuate “queer” stereotypes.
Lastly, although the film is riotously funny at times, a strange sadness surrounds the lonely and only openly gay person, the neighbor for whom François and his struggle represent a vengeance or restitution of a generation in the coming.
