Quelimane is located 25 km (16 mi) from the Indian Ocean along the Rio dos Bons Sinais, 110 km (70 mi) northeast of the mouth of the Zambezi River.
Quelimane was founded in the 15th century as a Swahili trading city, linking gold and ivory producing states in the African interior, especially Great Zimbabwe of the Karanga people, to the Indian Ocean trade network.
Quelimane was Portugal's favored staging point for trade and conquest along the Zambezi valley.

The provincial capital is Quelimane on the Bons Sinais River.
Shortly after, the Portuguese established a permanent presence, and many moved up the Zambezi into the interior, for many years the farthest inland European presence (although over time there was much intermarrying, and few residents were of purely Portuguese descent).
The postal districts of Quelimane and Tete were created from parts of Zambezia in about 1913, and then stamps of Mozambique replaced stamps of Zambezia around 1920.

I had to go south from Nampula to Quelimane by road since the UN airplane that dropped me and my two travel mates in the north had been grounded.
We hooked up with a convoy of trucks going south and were promised to get to Quelimane by the next day.
We finally made it to Quelimane, from where we were promised a daily boat heading for Beira (we couldn’t go by land because the bridges were destroyed).

On a first visit it is very nice to get some reassurance from the GPS after crawling for an eternity over bad unmarked roads.
The new tar road past Gorongoza from Nchope to Caia was still under construction when we went in April 2003, and gloriously open on our return two weeks later.

The port, which is about 19 kilometres from the sea, is on the 1.5-kilometre-wide Rios dos Boas Sinais, or ‘River of Good Signs’, named by Vasco da Gama when he sailed here in the late 1400s.
Like the rest of northern Mozambique, Quelimane is largely Islamic and the sounds of muezzins come from dozens of mosques throughout the city.
The main landmarks here are the District Governor’s residence, which dates from 1895, and the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora do Vibramento (built in 1785, four years before the French Revolution).

To enhance FHI's ability to carry out HIV/AIDS programs in Mozambique, FHI has established a central country office in Maputo and a field office in Quelimane, Zambezia Province (located in the middle of the country along the coast).
Zambezia is the geographical focus of the PMTCT program under the U.S. President's PMTCT Initiative.

The Dutch port company Cornelder, which took over management of the Mozambique port of Quelimane last week will immediately begin upgrading harbour facilities using a 23M euro grant made available by the German investment bank KFW.
The 25-year lease requires Cornelder to maintain and upgrade port infrastructure and equipment and assume control of all cargo handling operations and ship services including stevedoring.
Cornelder Netherlands holds a 70% stake in Cornelder Mozambique with CFM, the government-owned port and rail company holding the balance.
