  Palace of Queluz, Queluz
The palace was built between 1747 and 1794 for Pedro III and his wife, later Queen Maria I, originally to the design of the Portuguese architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira (1706-85), a pupil of the German architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig who built the Convent Palace of Mafra.
The Palácio Nacional de Queluz consisting of a central block and two wings gives the impression of a warm and friendly building and is therefore sometimes compared, not unreasonably, with Frederick the Great's palace of Sanssouci near Berlin.
The rich interior decoration is notable for the high quality of the craftsmanship and the sure taste with which the details are contrived and related to one another.

SINTRA - Palácio de Queluz Photo Gallery by Dias dos Reis at pbase.com
Established in 1654 by a royal charter signed by King John IV, the Casa do Infantado belonged to the second sons of the Portuguese royal family and included all the property confiscated from those who supported Castile after the Portuguese Restoration in 1640.
This heritage included the Quinta de Queluz (Queluz Estate) and the Pavilhão da Caça (Hunting Lodge) which had belonged to Dom Cristóvão de Moura, first Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo, since the last quarter of the 16th century.
The Queluz "Country House" became a Palace owing to Prince Peter (1717-1786), the second son of King John V and Queen Mariana of Austria, and brother of King José (1714-1777).

Portugal - Sintra - Queluz Palace
Begun in 1747 by the Infante Dom Pedro (later to become Dom Pedro III) on the basis of a former country mansion of the Marquises of Castelo Rodrigo, Queluz Palace (classified as a National Monument) at that time began to be adapted for use as a summer seat of the Royal Family.
Queluz, which has not infrequently been compared with Versailles Palace, differs from Louis XIV's edifice (in fact of earlier date) in the sense of scale and proportions revealed in its lines, perhaps with a more balanced distribution of graphic values, within a neo-classicism as yet not bound to the rococo formulae.
Only the force and exuberance of the pavilion conceived by Robillion, with its strong French and Austrian influence, strikes a more "evolved" note, for all the rest is thoroughly Portuguese, its scale and in the artistic spirit itself.
