Quentin Blake (1932-) originally studied English Literature at Cambridge, with the intention of working as an English teacher, but later developed his lifelong interest in drawing and painting by part-time study at Chelsea College of Art.
Quentin Blake is probably best known for his collaboration with Roald Dahl that began in 1975 and has resulted in classics such as The BFG, winner of the 1983 Children's Book Award, The Witches, winner of the 1983 Whitbread Award and Matilda, winner of the 1988 Children's Book Award.
Quentin Blake was awarded the OBE in the 1988 New Years Honours List and in May 1999 he was appointed as the first Children's Laureate.

The exhibition, Quentin Blake - Fifty Years of Illustration, opened at the Aberdeen Art Gallery on Saturday and runs until the middle of September.
There were no plans to tour it but Aberdeen Art Gallery approached The Quentin Blake Gallery of Illustration and asked if it could be brought to the city.
Among the special events planned are drawing workshops, storytelling sessions, a talk by Mr Blake on his life's work on 15 July and a chance for fans to meet the illustrator on 16 July.
