During the attack on an enemy strong point in which his officer was severely wounded: Sergeant Smythe took command of the platoon although suffering from a shrapnel wound in the forehead.
Throughout the engagement Sergeant Smythe displayed remarkable disregard for danger, and his leadership and courage were an inspiration to his men.

Captain Quentin Smythe VC, has died in South Africa, aged 81.
He won a VC in Libya in June 1942; the first VC won by a South African in the Second World War, and Smythe was the last surviving South African VC when he died.

Mike Duncan told of a remarkable man. Smythe was one of only four South Africans who in the last war won this award and the only one to win it whilst serving in the South Africa Forces.
Following the evacuation of his wounded commanding officer Smythe led his platoon in the face of determined fire where he took over a strongly defended Italian position.

For the next 67 days Ben and George were protected by the partisans as they returned them from behind enemy lines to the Allies in Italy on April 29, 1944.

Quentin Smythe was married to my mother,(fondly know as Peggy), formerly Margaret Joan McGregor, formely Margaret Joan Reid (nee Shatwell).
After his passing he married his third wife, Pat.Whom sadly I never met.
I have no idea of the whereabouts the Auctioned Medal, I do however have a miniature given to my mother during her marraige to Quentin.

A once wealthy couple tries to regain their wealth by going on a treasure hunt only to discover that their partner is a theif and plans to do them in.
This was the first Hammer film to be attacked for a lack of morality with many critics attaching the term "lurid" as a description of the film.
This is one of my guilty pleasures in that there is more than a few reasons to dismiss this film as pure fodder except for the fact that it is played so seriously in spite of the plot giving the film a fun quality.
