Telegraph Blogs : Foreign : Harry de Quetteville
But as we approach reunification day on October 3rd, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, Germans don't really feel they belong to a united nation at all.
Earlier this year I travelled to Cologne to report on the plans to build of one of Europe's biggest mosques there.
The campaign is sure to be nasty in the extreme, and the case of former Interior Minister Janusz Kaczmarek is a illuminating taster of the political brawl to come.

Journalism: Press Cards No Longer Shields (Global Journalist Magazine, Second Quarter 2004)
Harry de Quetteville, the London Telegraph's Baghdad correspondent, made a snap judgment to visit the former dictator's hometown, Tikrit, and gauge the mood in Iraq 's most pro-Saddam city.
Rumors that the road heading north from Baghdad was unsafe because of revengeful Saddam loyalists did not deter de Quetteville.
De Quetteville's annoyed driver revved the engine, overtook the other car and - with the vehicles level and the offending driver's attention secured - dipped his shoulder as if reaching for a gun.
