 Fiesta in Quiapo Manila, Black Nazarine Festival
On January 9, 2004 in the streets of Manila's Quiapo district the Philippines will celebrate the Black Nazarene Procession with throngs of people following the statue through the neighborhood in hopes of a miracle.
The Black Nazarene is a life-sized statue of Christ that a priest bought in Mexico and brought to Manila in 1606.
For more than 200 years the church has been placing the statue on a gilded carriage every January and pulling it through the streets of Quiapo.

Thousands of devotees are expected to keep vigil before the image of the Black Nazarene as it is exposed overnight at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park on Monday, Jan. 8, eve of Quiapo Church fiesta, and the first of a two-day celebration of the annual festivity.
Rather, it commemorates the traslacion or the transfer of the Nazareno from Intramuros to Quiapo church in the 18th century.
Ramirez said at the overnight vigil, devotees can pray in front of the image, touch it, and venerate it for a longer period of time, minus the stress and tension caused by impatience of the crowd that waits for the image to leave the church for the annual procession.

As I sat there in Quiapo many times I would meditate on the life of Our Lord: how he labored as a carpenter; how He rode a donkey into Jerusalem; how He drove the monechangers from the temple; how he went out in a vessel with the fishermen.
Quiapo is a culturally rich place -- tourists consider it a place to be seen.

 New book relives old Quiapo - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos
Zialcita, who spent part of his childhood in Quiapo, said the book, which was formally launched Saturday, contributes to the cause of heritage preservation and promotion by highlighting, inventorying, analyzing, and interpreting the area's many traditions.
In the book's preface, he claimed that he and the other Quiapo enthusiasts chose to document and promote the heritage of the area because "it is compelling as an ensemble" as he cited its outstanding landmarks.
These are: Quiapo Basilica which houses the well-loved Black Nazarene; the neo-gothic San Sebastian Church, one of the few churches in the world made of steel; the so-called Pagoda, which was commissioned by Jose Ocampo to decorate his garden; and the Golden Mosque, which serves as a worship place for Muslims.

I fancy it is the only whitewashed structure within a radius of three kilometers, not counting, of course, the boulevard islands which would receive their occasional make-over to erase the red cement slogans of rallying protesters.
It is easy for the unsuspecting pedestrian to be trapped in a whirlpool of bodies heaving out of the church for a breath of fresher air and those as persistent trying to get in for the best seats in the house.
Quiapo always seems to manage a surface of filth, notwithstanding the almost constant downpour in the country.
