Quileute lands extended along the coast from Cape Alava south to the Hoh River (in present-day Jefferson County), and up the Quillayute and Hoh drainages.
The Quileutes' only linguistic relatives were the Chimakum, who lived near Port Townsend until the 1860s, when the few to survive European diseases and tribal war were absorbed into the Klallams.
Klallam, Quileute, and Makah leaders were willing to open most of their land to American settlement, but made it clear that they wanted to continue living in their traditional homelands.

David Forlines of La Push, on the Quileute Indian Reservation, was instrumental in the revival of many of the traditions of the Quileute Tribe.
Although not a tribal member, he grew up on the west Olympic Peninsula, and served as a teacher, counselor, and spiritual leader on both the Puyallup and Quileute Reservations.
He organized a team that in 1989 carved a canoe and paddled it over 200 miles of open water, from La Push to Seattle, for the State Centennial’s “Paddle to Seattle” celebration.

The Quileute are noted for their skill in pelagic sealing and are the most successful in that pursuit of all the tribes of the coast.
