Even though Big Quill Lake can support a large breeding population of Piping Plovers, there is very little information on Piping Plover reproductive success at this lake and the role it plays in the overall conservation of this species.
Study area.--Big Quill Lake (51[degrees] 53'N, 104[degrees] 15' W) is a large (30,700 ha), shallow, saline basin on the Central Saskatchewan Plains about 200 km east of Saskatoon.

The waters and islands of Redberry Lake were reserved as a federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary in 1915, and the islands have been protected as a Wildlife Refuge.

Among them was my first "Quill Lake" Canada, a unique bird with a white, horizontal bar across the breast, said to be reared near Quill Lake, Saskatchewan.
Other than that area, to the best of my knowledge, the Pierre area is one of the few other areas where an occasional such bird is taken.
