The Hoh, Bogachiel, Sol Duc, Calawah, and Quillayute rivers on Washington's Olympic Peninsula
The river is best known for its large run of hatchery steelhead, yet some of the largest steelhead to return to any of the Olympic Peninsula rivers return to the upper portions of this river.
Calawah, which means "middle river", referring to the river's placement between the Sol Duc and Bogachiel rivers, begins just three or four miles northeast of Forks, Washington, where its two forks, the North and South, join.
Formed by the confluence of the Bogachiel and Sol Duc rivers, the Quillayute, one of the shortest rivers in Washington at less than 6 miles, is totally tidal.

Last week, the state closed the Quillayute to all sportfishing, and closed its tributaries -- the Sol Duc, Bogachiel, Calawah and Dickey rivers -- and the Hoh River to chinook fishing.
State fish biologists say that because of extremely low flows due to the lack of rain, chinook are not migrating upstream to their spawning grounds, and are susceptible to illegal fishing such as snagging.
