But the rest of the story, as the saying goes, is that long before Quincy was flooded over, the county seat had moved to Friendship, and so, this month, 150 years to the day after Adams County was created, there was a dry board room to house the overflow crowd that gathered to celebrate.
The coincidence allowed Adams County to hold its own sesquicentennial observance this month, as it also allowed the governor a dry run for the boastful "Wisconsin is first" sesquicentennial speechifying that will have him hoarse as a filibusterer by fall.
Adams County's record is one of boom and bust, perhaps heavier on the bust end.

James H. Lockwood was the pioneer lawyer in Crawford county, he having settled in Prairie du Chien, Sept. 16, 1816, though he did not engage in the practice of law till several years later, being employed in mercantile business in the meantime.
Kast was admitted to the bar in Crawford county at the November term of the circuit court, 1871, and has practiced in the courts of this county, Grant, Richland, Vernon and Iowa counties.
Charles H. Speck, register of deeds of Crawford county, is the son of Frederick and Louisa Speck, and was born Oct. 9, 1854, in Milwaukee, Wis. He came with his parents to Crawford county in 1860, who settled in Eastman township, where Charles H. was reared on a farm.
