Topic: Quinnipiac Polls

Opinion poll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first known example of an opinion poll was a local straw vote conducted by The Harrisburg Pennsylvanian in 1824, showing Andrew Jackson leading John Quincy Adams by 335 votes to 169 in the contest for the United States Presidency.
All polls based on samples are subject to sampling error which reflects the effects of chance in the sampling process.
Despite the polling organisations using different methodologies virtually all the polls in the lead up to the vote (and exit polls taken on voting day) showed a lead for the opposition Labour party but the actual vote gave a clear victory to the ruling Conservative party.

Quinnipiac University polls were started in 1988 by a professor who wanted his students to have a understanding of how polls work.

The latest poll from the Quinnipiac College Polling Institute had the Republican New York City mayor favored by 48 percent of registered voters, with the Democratic first lady backed by 41 percent.
A poll released by Quinnipiac on Feb. 6, the day Clinton formally entered the race, had Giuliani favored by 45 percent of New York voters to 42 percent for the first lady, a statistical tie given that poll's margin of error of 3 percentage points.
Quinnipiac's polls over the past six months have shown the race extremely close, and often the gap between the two has been within those polls' margins of error.

 A Ned Lamont Landslide?
Lieberman's job approval rating in the latest Quinnipiac poll conducted July 13-18, 2006 stands at 55%, down from 73% in January 2005 (-25%); down from 62% in January 2006 (-11%); and down 31% from his 80% approval rating in September 2000 when he last ran for the Senate.
According to the July 2006 Quinnipiac poll 24% of respondents who had intended to vote for Lieberman, informed of his strong support for the Iraq war, indicated that they disagreed with his position on the war.
Those polls mean little given the likely growth of Lamont's name-recognition between now and November, and a decisive primary victory by Lamont and the accompanying publicity such a victory would bring would also likely have a major impact on the subsequent polls and on the fall election.

It is my contention that polls are the first step in propagating or sustaining comforting myths (Republicans are paragons of "family values" and "Christian love"; Democrats are "tax-and-spend liberals who ejaculate on interns' dresses").
Polls purport to reveal "truths" that are really lies, then get people to go along by playing on the human impulse to stick with "winners" and view the political world in fl and white rather than the shades of gray by which they view the rest of their lives.
If polls offer any kinder, gentler truths about American politics, it may be this: The key to change in America is to locate this chronically undecided segment and reach them with a consistent, compelling message that has long-term credibility.

Each poll has a margin of error of a little over +/- 3 (+/- 3.3% on the first poll and +/- 3.5% on the second), but remember, that applies to each individual candidate estimate not to the margin or the difference between polls.

The Muhlenberg and Quinnipiac surveys are not completely comparable, since the former did not include the Green candidate, but taken together, they show a race that has shifted in the Republican’s direction after weeks in which he had significantly outspent his challenger on the state’s airwaves.

Five polls were released during the past week with the “spread” ranging from a low of Bush -4% (WP) to Bush +7% (QU).
If the Quinnipiac polls are to be trusted, one has to accept that Bush’s approval rating shifted +6% and disapprove shifted -2% in less than two months.
With three polls showing Bush’s spread moving downward by -1 or -2% and Quinnipiac showing Bush’s spread +6%, the evidence is that the Quinnipiac polls are overstating Bush’s approval ratings.
