  Quinquereme Information
A quinquereme was a galley, a warship propelled by oars, developed from the earlier trireme.
Quinqueremes are thought to have had three rows of oars, with two men pulling each of the top two oars.
Quinqueremes were even more difficult to make stable than triremes, and the increase in speed was not so great as to give the larger galleys much of an advantage.

The Book Of Wonder Encyclopaedia - ~Q is for Quince - Quinoa - Quinquereme~
Roman quinqueremes were superior warships of their era; being built with durable cedar making them heavy and stable in stormy weather and sturdy enough to withstand the pressure of ramming or being rammed.
The quinqueremes were propelled by several banks of oars, each oar propelled by five men - hence the 'quin' - making it a very speedy vessel.
The Romans were soldiers, not sailors, but their strength and battle training came in useful when an enemy ship had to be boarded, using a gangplank, called a 'corvus', which had a large metal spike in the end to anchor it securely.

Based on the basic design of the trireme, the quinquereme became the standard battle ship.
One might assume that the "quin" (latin for "five) in "quinquereme" refered to five levels of ours, just as a "tri"reme had three levels.
However, it would be very difficult to row a ship with more than 4 levels of oars, so it is more likely that the "quin" refered to the files of rowers.

Corvus was only used by the Romans against the Carthaginians during the First Punic War (264BC to 241BC), and then only used for around 5 years from its introduction in 264 BC to around 269 BC.
Only Roman Quinqueremes were equipped with Corvus, which was the main Roman warship during this period.
The Roman Quinquereme closed in on its target, and then when in range, the Corvus ramp was dropped and because it had long metal spikes protruding from its tip, Corvus literally stuck into the enemy ship's deck.
