The state is bordered by Guatemala and Belize on the south, by the Caribbean Sea on the east, by the Gulf of Mexico on its northern tip, and by the states of Yucatán and Campeche on the west.
Quintana Roo was the least populated of Mexico’s states in 1970, but it had the highest level of migration in Mexico between 1980 and 1990 due largely to the growth of tourism.
