Topic: Quintessence (album)

Borknagar - Satan Stole My Teddybear
The first album by the somewhat transitional "supergroup" (ha!) of Norway's Borknagar has recently been reissued in the States by Century Black, giving us a chance to see their original sound after already hearing where they've taken the thing up to this point.
Quintessence is the long awaited album from the somewhat revamped lineup and naturally the question is if the result is worth the wait and anticipation.
Having given this album many listens, I can honestly say it still suggests that this band is still hovering around a brilliant, timeless and classic release, but perhaps only if they can retain the same recording lineup for more than an album or two.

Quintessence: Alot of people and critics compare you to Malmsteen and would be necessary to say he's an influence even though he's close in age.
I owed them another album, my U.S. sales were destroyed, and Varney held my fucking feet to the fire to take far less money for the next one because of what he actually did.
I called him about doing the album and he said he was involved in theatre and acting and not really into doing an album, but he highly recommended Michael to me and gave me his phone number.

 Mourning Beloveth
The production of the album is perhaps different, a lot colder and harsher and the songs are stripped back some more than on TSS…it is almost like we are regressing to our first album.
Well every album is a concept album In a way, all songs written around the same period of time about the same subjects.
This album musically and lyrically is dealing with this and it is a very diverse album as two things pull against each other creating a grey vastness between, musically we have written some of the softest pieces yet and also some of the most brutal and cold.

 Abigor Review
This album came out at a time when fl metal was only known in the Scandinavian area so I often get the feeling not many people were interested in a Austrian fl metal band at the time.
This album certainly is one of the more interesting albums Abigor has made, and that's mostly just due to the fact that they went all out on this album, and really experimented.
All this album gives us is disorganized noise with an almost non-existent bass sound and vocals that are impossible to follow as they are not printed in the booklet and are obviously unintelligible when heard.

When I first heard this album it was a pure delight to hear the pounding fl metal through the vocal regions, the symphonic aspects in the aural atmosphere and the obvious stellar guitars rounding out the power metal influences.
Borknagar has always refused to become a stagnant part of the metal scene and "Quintessence" just goes to prove their agility as a band and members of metal.
Moreover, this album also extends to the sheer brutality of fused metal in its purest form.

Teufel's Tomb : Brutal Isn't Just A Way Of Life... It's Also Stupid!
Do not listen to this album if you are just passing the time, you will get totally bored.
In fact, at times one may notice themselves focusing mainly on the high-note melodies swirling around, carrying them into a further realm of synthetic oblivion (where they can stay and dwell and figure out exactly what the hell that's supposed to mean).
This is an album you will play years from now and say, "I don't remember all this being here." Also, track 6, Demon's Vortex, has a riff from Kingdom Of Darkness (off the first Abigor).

 The Metal Crypt - Reviews
Quintessence is made of 10 tracks totaling a little over 43 minutes, and they go by pretty fast, leaving me craving for more, and with no alternative but to replay the album.:) The album starts fast and heavy with "Rivalry Of Phantoms", one of the best songs on the album.
The vocals on the second song, "The Presence Is Ominous" are the most notable on the album, as most of the singing is a "team effort" rather than just the lead vocalist, this practically sounds like an anthem.
The rest of the album goes along the same line as the beginning, with the exception of the very short instrumental song "Embers".

The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music - Malicorne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Malicorne's early albums (up to Quintessence) are mostly slightly electric arrangements of traditional songs and sound very much like a French version of Steeleye Span, updating and electrifying traditional tunes and songs, but keeping the vocal harmonies and techniques intact.
I waited anxiously for these albums to be released on cd, wearing out my vinyl and taped copies. They are worth every bit of effort involved in tracking copies down.
This is the album with the man and the boy pointing to the elaborate "M" for Malicorne in the evening sky.

This fifth album of theirs showcases the longest songs ever recorded by the band and accomplishes a sound unlike any of their previous musical efforts, while still maintaining their standard of medieval atmosphere.
Considered their "neo-folk" album, this release is filled with rich lyrical intricacies and lush acoustic instrumentations.

 Projekt: darkwave - 'Quintessence'
The fifth full-length album of The Soil Bleeds Black, appropriately titled, Quintessence, exemplifies an aura of gothic and medieval folk songs portraying the magical elements of earthe, air, fyre, water, and spirit.
Basing the album around five tracks (Œearthe‚, Œair‚, Œfyre‚, Œwater‚ & Œquintessence‚) the first track, a brooding piece of acoustic guitar sentimentalities, is embellished with various percussive elements, woodwind instruments, and even a trumpet.
This album is easily the pinnacle of what TSBB have recorded to date and now sees the group further aligning themselves with the current neo-folk movement where particular comparison to the like of Atataxia can be made.

 Phil Jones CDs & Tapes
Since my time as the lead singer of the original Quintessence during the late 1960's and early 1970's, I have developed a passionate and focused approach to writing music that addresses the relevant Geo-Political climate our global community is facing today.
The music and message are seasoned with a bit of humor and satire, yet still maintain the general flavors of the original Quintessence (communal chanting and esoteric philosophical themes), hopefully inspiring us to transcend pervasive individual and political delusive fears and narrow mindsets, which often subliminally foster destructive agendas such as greed and aggression.
One of the biggest differences since the old Quintessence band is the phenomenal talent that Rudra Beauvert brings to the music.

The Norwegians of Borknagar have developed a lot since their early days and this is in fact the quintessence of progressive fl metal.
The third and fourth tracks of the album are some of the best fl metal songs ever made and this is a lot thanks to the wonderful semi-operatic vocals from I.C.S. Vortex who unfortunately has left the band for Dimmu Borgir since then.
It is still an enigma why the band didn't use his vocals a lot more than they did because they are simply amazing at their best.

Transcending the Mundane (TTM): Listen / Buy / Read Review of Quintessence by Borknagar
Quintessence is a transition album, finding Borknagar still operating in a similar field musically as on The Archaic Course, but also changing the focus, making something a little darker than before, less organic sounding.
I don't like their new keyboardist, maybe it's because Ivar Bjornson was so talented, but this new guy doesn't seem to understand how to totally infiltrate the keyboard elements into the songs, sometimes using some really strange and bad sounding effects.
If Quintessence is not their greatest work, it is nonetheless a significant one, and the next step on a path that is distinctly their own.
