Quintus Roscius Gallus - LoveToKnow 1911
Endowed with a handsome face and manly figure, he studied the delivery and gestures of the most distinguished advocates in the Forum, especially Q. Hortensius, and won universal praise for his grace and elegance on the stage.
The two often engaged in friendly rivalry to try whether the orator or the actor could express a thought or emotion with the greater effect, and Roscius wrote a treatise in which he compared acting and oratory.
Lutatius Catulus composed a quatrain in his honour, and the dictator Sulla presented him with a gold ring, the badge of the equestrian order, a remarkable distinction for an actor in Rome, where the profession was held in contempt.

His arguments were divided into three parts: the first where he defended Roscius and attempted to prove he did not commit the crime, the second where he attacked the people who likely committed the crime (one a relative of Roscius) and stated how the crime fitted them more than the defendant.
Later, writing to his brother Quintus he made the correct diagnosis of his untenable position:"The defection of Pompey, the hostility of the senators and judges, the timidity of equestrians, the armed bands of Clodius" Meanwhile Atticus, his loyal friend, tried his best together with Cicero´s wife Terentia to obtain the recall of Cicero.(Haskell H.J.:1964 201-202)

Master Grossmith, a seven-year-old, was introduced on the stage as the "Celebrated Infant Roscius," and Miss Lee Sugg, another child prodigy, as the "Young Roscia." Inevitably, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and several American Roscii and Rosciae, including a Kentucky Roscius, soon appeared.
Since Aldridge was both young and fl, he was quickly dubbed the "African Roscius," an honorific title given extra resonance when theater managers began to spread the word that he was the son of a Christian Fulani prince from Senegal.
Being an "African" was not enough; he also had to prove his credentials as a "Roscius." One way he did this was to draw upon anti-slavery sentiments by playing long-suffering slaves in abolitionist melodramas set in the New World.
