Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Quintus Smyrnaeus: The Fall of Troy (Loeb Classical Library No. 19)
Quintus had big shoes to fill when he wrote his epic "Posthomerica" ("After Homer"), which is another name for this book, about a thousand years after Homer.
Quintus tried hard to mimic the poetic beauty of Homer's language, using remarkably similar similes throughout, but his epic lacks the central themes that Homer used to hold his epics together.
Quintus has obviously been saturated in the spirit of Homer and it shows throughout the story, so despite some antiquated language, at times, this is an important epic poem filling in the story where the Iliad leaves off.

Quintus Smyrnaeus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quintus Smyrnaeus (or Quintus of Smyrna) was a Greek epic poet.
Smyrnaeus' date is controversial, but traditionally placed in the latter part of the 4th century AD, though some suggest an earlier date in the 3rd or even 2nd century AD, arguing that his Posthomerica shows an influence from the Second Sophistic.

Quintus of Smyrna's Greek epic the Posthomerica, now datable in the late 3rd century A.D., was designed to replace that part of the early Epic Cycle which told the story of the Trojan War from the point at which the Iliad ends.

The relatively new material suggesting that Quintus was the father of Dorotheus, a Christian priest martyred under Diocletian, is clearly and convincingly presented.
Quintus' choice of sources may indicate nothing more than personal preference or the popularity of a source (or even Quintus' rebellion against popularity?).
Quintus makes use of irony, paradox, dramatic tension, suspense, climax, foreshadowing, ring composition, similes (which are largely "Homeric in manner and content"), and variations on traditional themes or motifs." The authors provide illustrative examples and judiciously defend Quintus from the dismissive criticisms which have been too readily levelled at the late epic poets generally.

For a long time Quintus Smyrnaeus was looked upon by scholars as a mere and unpretentious epigone of Homer.
As a result, Quintus is no longer regarded as a 'clumsy imitator' but re-established as an author who handles his Homeric model in a most creative way.
In order to gain deeper insight into how and according to what kind of literary principles Quintus revitalizes Homer, I want to put special focus on the phenomenon of the 'Second Sophistic' (of which Quintus forms a part) and on other related fields as, for example, classical art history.
