Quirites   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Quirites, sons of Quirinus, an ancient god worshipped by the Sabines on the Quirinal.
AUC I.13 explains that, upon the union of the Sabines and the Romans into a single state, they called the civic populace Quirites, after the Sabine town of Cures.
In modern times the name has been linked to a reconstructed Latin form *co-viri-um or "assembly of the men." Certainly, Quirites is what the Romans called themselves when addressing each other as "citizen men," without reference to class or rank.

The word may possibly be associated with the Roman Quirites, or the 30 matristic tribes and clans of Rome, especially surnamed by Æneas for their heroism, that were given to tribadism and promiscuity.
Quirites : the Romans descended from Sabinian mothers.
When 30 Sabinian women intervened to stop the Roman-Sabinian war, a period of peace and prosperity ensued at Rome, and as an expression of gratitute for this act of peacekeeping, Romulus granted names to the 30 mothers.

Quirinus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Such a distinction between Quirites as civilians, distinct from milites may also be behind a formula found in Varro where he quoted from the Commentarii Consulares and the consul addresses his assistant to gather together the Quirites who will form his army.
There is really nothing to suggest that Quirites implies "the people of Quirinus." But it does go back to this earlier time of a community of farmers who would leave their fields and pick up spears (cures) to defend the city.
Although the term Quirites and the name Quirinus probably derive from the same term, curis, meaning spear, there is really no reason to assume that the two are directly related to one another.

 Quirinus
These epitaphs were applied to all citizens regardless of their ethnic origin, and it cannot be certain that the term Quirites is related to Quirinus, the Quirinal as the 'Sabine Hill', or whether it was derived from some other source (7).
In legend Romulus took auguries for the founding of the city upon the Palatine, and Remus took auguries on the Aventine, the Palatine thus became identified with Romulus and the Latins.
The term Quirites never implied that the citizens of Rome were passive civilians, but rather that they remained in vigilant defense of their independence, even in times of peace.

All Quirites that are poor, ought long ago to have emigrated in a body.
Difficult indeed is it for those to emerge from obscurity whose noble qualities are cramped by narrow means at home; but at Rome, for men like these, the attempt is still more hopeless; it is only at an exorbitant price they can get a wretched lodging, keep for their servants, and a frugal meal.
