  Quonset hut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Quonset hut is a lightweight prefabricated structure of corrugated iron having a semicircular cross section.
The name comes from their site of first manufacture, Quonset Point, at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville (a village located within the town of North Kingstown, Rhode Island).
This structure in Buckeye, Colorado was augemented with a fireplace to serve as a farm cottage.

The land comprising Quonset Point was bought by the State of Rhode Island in 1892 and in 1937 a large portion of it was donated to the Federal Government.
The Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, Rhode Island is located on a cape on the west shore of Narragansett Bay, approximately ten (10) miles up the bay from Newport and twenty (20) miles down the bay from Providence, Rhode Island.
Quonset Point was selected and in May, 1940, $24,204,000 was asked of Congress by the Navy to finance the project.

Quonset Point completed its 11th year of accident free operation, having flown more than 16,000 hours since forming July 1960.

A terminal at Quonset Point could provide a critical link between water transportation (ferries and possibly other boats), air transportation (the existing airport already generates approximately 8500 trips per year), and surface transportation (RIPTA buses, internal shuttles, automobiles, bicycles, and pedestrians).
The research team will analyze selected multimodal, mixed-use terminal developments to identify factors that will be most pertinent to designing terminal scenarios for Quonset Point and evaluating their likelihood for success.
The study will also be useful to other communities in Rhode Island that may be considering the development of a new ferry terminal, the redevelopment of an existing ferry terminal, or the redevelopment of the terminal’s surrounding neighborhood.

I've noticed that there is a 'Fast Ferry' from Quonset Point, RI to the Vineyard, and I'm wondering if anyone has taken it - sure looks like a good option on the map.
We used the fast ferry from Quonset for the first time in 2003, after many trips on the older, not-fast Woods Hole ferry.
At that time, facilities at Quonset were pretty minimal -- and because the schedule is limited, you will probably spend some time there waiting.
