Introduction to The Sunnah and Its Position in the Islamic Law (Islaam.Com)
Another familiar meaning of Sunnah is that of legal daleel (evidence, proof) whether it is in the Qur’aan, the Prophet's sayings, or Ijtihaad by the Companions, such as the collection of Qur’aan in one book and unifying the reading of the Qur’aan on one Harf (reading style).
Opposite to this is Bid`ah (inovation) in religion [about] which Rasoolullaah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said clearly "Follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the righteous Caliphs after me" and did not say follow my bid`ah which should not be taken as the same as Sunnah.
Sunnah in the Arabic language (without any religious context) means a way or method which can have two states, either a good Sunnah or a bad Sunnah.

 et - Full Story
DEBATING THE QUESTION “Is it Sunnah, or is it Qur&; is a near-daily occurrence for many Muslims, but few have done so with the frequency and fervor of the reformist thinker Gamal El-Banna and his critics at Al-Azhar University, the Cairo-based bastion of Sunni thought.
El-Banna dismisses accusations that he is calling on the faithful to abandon the Sunnah, but insists that the orally transmitted traditions of the Prophet (PBUH) are less binding on Muslims than the Qur& itself.
The Sunnah were transmitted orally by the Prophet (PBUH)’s companions, the most significant of whom for the ahadith are Abu Hurayra (5374 ahadith), Abduallah Ibn Omar (2630), Anas Ibn Malik (2286) and the Prophet& wife, Aisha (2210).

 Shi'a Real Ahl al-Sunnah
This is what the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger sanction, in addition to what is sanctioned by reason and conscience, and by anyone who has some knowledge of the Holy Qur'an and the sacred Sunnah of the Prophet.
Since the Holy Qur'an, the sacred Sunnah of the Prophet, and history stated all these facts and clearly explained them, the claim put forth by "Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama`ah" that all the sahaba were fair and just becomes nonsense which has no face value whatsoever because it contradicts the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah.
The summary of this chapter is that the Shi`as, followers of the creed of Ahl al-Bayt, place the sahaba in perspective; they pray Allah to be pleased with the righteous among them, and they dissociate themselves from the hypocrites and the sinners, the enemies of Allah and His Messenger, from them.

Shariati’s theory had a pivotal role for the Shii conception of the Imam, as the life of Ali and other Imams, particularly Ali’ s son Husseyn, were to form a guide for correct interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah.

 The Authority of Sunnah (InterIslamicNet)
In order to represent the Sunnah in the affairs of the Ummah as correctly and accurately as possible, Muslims must view the Sunnah in a structured, categorical framework to understand what aspects of the Sunnah bear relevance to their lives and to avoid the pitfalls of misapplication and ambiguity in defining the Sunnah.
The Sunnah also excludes specialised and technical knowledge, such as medicine, engineering, agriculture, or computers, because such technical expertise is not considered a part of the function of Prophethood.
To emphasise the authority of the Sunnah, the Quran has mentioned the disobedience to the Prophet (saw) as equal to the disobedience to Allah (swt):

Approaching Qur'an and Sunnah - Classical, Traditional and Progressive Methodologies
Indeed, this Sunnah was elevated to the level of being the most reliable and superior type of Qur& exegesis (tafsir bi l-ma'suri) based predominantly on the traditional knowledge epistemology(ilm -ul- riwaaya) despite the existance of other types of tafsirs such as tafsir bi-l-ray, shi& tafsir or ta'wil (esoteric -sufi tafsir).
The centrality of the concept of Qur& and Sunnah in Muslim thought, may it be intellectual, academic, classical, traditionalist or progressive in nature, that of a Muslim theologian/jurist or a "lay" Muslim, male or a female, is well attested historically.
The traditional understanding of Sunnah is that it is "conceptually identical with that of Ahadith literature judged to be authentic; that Sunnah by definition can only be referred back to the Prophet (sunnat al-nabi)and that it enjoys a status of revelation (wahy).

But since the question has been asked, we will present, with the help of Allah, the principles and bases of the importance of the Sunnah, the obligation to follow it and the ruling concerning those who reject it.

 Difference Between Hadith and Sunnah
It is hard to understand their logic, since, as the Quran is proved by the verbal adherence of the Ummah, likewise the Sunnah is proved by the practical adherence of the Ummah.
Owing to ignorance on this point, the followers of Sunnah themselves are divided into different sects, and continue to accuse one another of disregarding the Sunnah.
Thereafter, whatever doubts were invented against the Hadith by the non-believers of Hadith were extended by them to deny the Sunnah as well, though the denial of the Sunnah is tantamount to denial of the Quran itself, as already explained.

Sunnah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sunnah must be made distinct from both fiqh, which are opinions of the classical jurists, and the Quran, which is revelation, not record.
Terminologically, the word ‘Sunnah’ in Sunni Islam means the deeds, sayings and approvals of Muhammad during the 23 years of his ministry, and this means that whatever he did during his ministry as a prophet and messenger of Allah is considered a sunnah, which Muslims are recommended to follow.
The Sunnah is the way or deeds of Muhammad in Sunni Islam, and the way or deeds of Muhammad and the twelve Imams in Shi'a Islam, while Hadith is a collection of the narrations and approvals.

Then comes the Sunnah and clarifies the sentences and specifies the verses called 'Amah' and defines what is 'mutlaq' that is, in refernce to the saying (Qaul) of The Prophet (SAW), his deed (Fi'l) and the act he confirmed (Iqrar).

 Introduction to the Sunnah
The Sunnah explains the minimum of stolen goods for which a thief deserves this punishment and the manner in which the hand should be cut off.
There are numerous examples set by the Companions which show how emphatically they abided by the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to the extent of severing their relations with their kith and kin once they discovered someone going against the Sunnah.
First of all, we will establish that the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, not only received the verses of the Qur'ân from Allah, but he also received other revelation from time to time which is now preserved in the form of hadiths.
