Qurghonteppa and Kulob were the hardest-hit regions during the civil war in Tajikistan (1992–1997).

In early September, monitored by the government and UN and CIS observers, UTO armed forces begin to move from central Tajikistan to Dushanbe in anticipation of their leaders' return from exile.

I'm still in the capital, Dushanbe, and leave tomorrow morning for my posting in the bustling metropolis of Qurghonteppa, in the south of the country.
The Tajiks speak the same language as Afghanis, so Qurghonteppa was Russia's best bet to get behind enemy lines.
Apparently they are phasing this out and won't stay for much longer - much to the detriment of Qurghonteppa's economy.

This division, whose personnel are ethnically heterogeneous, came under jurisdiction of the Russian Federation in 1992 and remained under Russian command in early 1996.
Officially neutral in the civil war, Russian and Uzbekistani forces, including armored vehicles of the 201st Division and armored vehicles, jets, and helicopters from Uzbekistan, provided significant assistance in antireformist assaults on the province of Qurghonteppa and on Dushanbe.
The 201st Division failed to warn the inhabitants of Dushanbe that neo-Soviet forces had entered the city, nor did it interfere with the victors' wave of violence against opposition supporters in Dushanbe.

Tajikistani factories produced thread from some of the cotton harvest, but, by the end of the Soviet era, more than 90 percent of the cotton thread that was spun went elsewhere to be turned into finished goods.
In 1990 the two southern provinces of Qurghonteppa and Kulob produced roughly two-thirds of the republic's cotton, but they processed only 1 percent of the crop locally.
Despite widespread concern about overemphasis on cotton cultivation, the post-civil war government attempted to expand the production of the country's most important cash crop.

In Qurghonteppa, the provincial capital of Khatlon region, the OSCE Centre's Field Office and the Khatlon Regional Committee on Youth Affairs will hold a competition for high school students on the history of the Human Rights Day, as well as sports and education events on 10 December.

Qurghonteppa, 7 March: The collegium of the Khatlon regional court on criminal cases [in the south of the country] started a hearing of the criminal case over the murder of a religious personality, Eshon Saidhodi, on 5 March.
The judge of the regional court, Shamsullo Aheyev, has told Asia-Plus that three defendants, namely a resident of Bokhtar District and second-year student at Qurghonteppa State University, Nabijon Obidov; and residents of the same district, Aminjon Obidov and Mirzoulughbek Mirzoaliyev; are on trial for murder.
Saidhodi Abdusamadov (Eshon Saidhodi) was killed in his house near the village of Politotdel in Bokhtar District at about 2345 [local time: 1845 gmt] on 11 September 2006.
