From what I've read, the source is not easily identifiable.
The Qutbee faction seems to be a primary source of the current jihad (because of it's call for strict reformation) but even it's existence and recognition within "mainstream" Islam is controversial.
OBL was a student of Sayyed Qutb and, thus, is thought of as a Qutb disciple even though he has only "identified" himself with traditional Sunni.
