Quthing was established in 1877, abandoned in the Gun War of 1880, and then rebuilt at its present site – the southernmost town in Lesotho.
Quthing is also known as Moyeni, meaning ‘Place of the Wind’.
Upper Quthing was the centre of the colonial administration, and provides better views of the area’s surrounding hills than the lower section of this curiously split–level town.

In the southern district of Quthing, rains were recorded at 500 mm (20 inches), double the previous highest rate of 251 mm (10 inches) recorded in 1988, Lesotho Meteorological Services official Mabafokeng Mahahabisa told Reuters.
The meteorological office warned earlier this month that a tropical cyclone off the coast of Mozambique and the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar would cause heavy rains and strong winds.

 BIRD FLU SURVEILLANCE CONTINUES IN QUTHING
The Department of Agriculture and Food Security through Livestock Division in Quthing is currently undertaking a one week surveillance on Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flue, the event that will continue until Friday this week.
The Districts Veterinary Officer Dr. Mokelabai Mundia says the surveillance is carried out in seven agricultural resource centres of the district to confirm that the district is free from the bird flue.
A similar surveillance will also be undertaken in the districts of Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseka and Qacha's neck.
