HYDRA (watersnake), in Greek legend, the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, a gigantic monster with nine heads (the number is variously given), the centre one being immortal.
The generally accepted interpretation of the legend is that the hydra denotes the damp, swampy ground of Lerna with its numerous springs (K~tiaXaL, heads); its poison the miasmic vapours rising from the stagnant water; its death at the hands of Heracles the introduction of the culture and consequent purification of the soil (Preller).
HYDRA, in astronomy, a constellation of the southern hemisphere, mentioned by Eudoxus (4th century n.e.) and Aratus (3rd century Bc.), and catalogued by Ptolemy (27 stars), Tycho Brahe (19) and Hevelius (31).

The variable star R Hydrae has the distinction of being the third Mira-type variable to be discovered, falling in behind omircon Ceti (also known as Mira, which is the prototype of the class) found in 1596 and chi Cygni found in 1686.
R Hya is, in fact, known for its declining period.
The century of steady decrease in R Hydrae's period is consistent with theoretical calculations of what should happen to a pulsating red giant after the sudden ignition of helium near its core.

A Mira star, 390 light-years away in the constellation Leo, that is one the brightest and easiest to observe variable stars in the sky.
Discovered by J. Koch of Danzig in 1782, R Leonis was the fifth variable star, and fourth long-period variable to be found after Mira itself, Chi Cygni, and R Hydrae.
It may be a result of non-radial pulsations (the star not pulsating equally in all directions) or it may be an optical illusion as a result of large dark spots on the star, perhaps caused by giant convection cells.
