Bennett was born on July 3, 1870 when his mother, Henrietta Stiles, was visiting at her parent's home in Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick, Canada.
Bennett's conversion, however, was seen as too little too late, and he faced criticism that his reforms either did not go far enough, or that they encroached on provincial jurisdictions laid out in Section 92 of the British North America Act.
Bennett was the Honorary Colonel of The Calgary Highlanders from the year of their designation as such in 1921 to his death in 1947.

Bennett was a member of the Assembly of the Northwest Territories for 6 years and was elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1909, then resigned to contest and win the Calgary East Riding for the Conservatives in the general election of 1911.
Bennett was the first Prime Minister to come from a Calgary riding, and the only one with this distinction until Calgary MP Stephen Harper was elected to the position in 2006.
Richard Bennett retired to Britain in 1938, and, on 12 June, 1941, became the first, and only, former Canadian Prime Minister to be elevated to the British House of Lords, as Viscount Bennett, of Mickleham in the County of Surrey and of Calgary and Hopewell in the Dominion of Canada.

In the end Bennett cast Stevens aside, rugged individualism seemed a pitiful response to the Depression, and the radical tone of Bennett's rendering of paternal conservatism was branded either as heresy or a cynical power grab.

The only memorial to Bennett in Hopewell Cape is a marker that is easily missed by the hundreds of tourists who pass it every day on the way to The Rocks and Fundy National Park.
Ironically, Bennett had a role in that decision: In 1927 Macdonald's party, the Conservatives, voted to pay for maintenance of the grave, but a dispute with local people in Kingston delayed the implementation.
