Even though he was born in South Carolina, Robert Gregg Cherry grew up in Gastonia with his material grandparents after his mother died.
Governor Cherry had a primary goal of expanding the facilities at the state-owned mental hospitals.
Governor Cherry returned to Gastonia after his term in office and practiced law until his death in 1957.

Gregg Cherry; acquired by the Navy from the War Shipping Administration on 14 November; and commissioned on 30 November 1944, Lt. Comdr.
The attack cargo ship held shakedown training in the Chesapeake Bay and then moved up the coast to Davis-ville, R.I., to load cargo.

The United States issued a gas mask similar to one used by the British called a "small box respirator." In 1917 and 1918 American forces suffered 74,269 casualties, including 1,462 deaths, from toxic gases.
This mask belonged to R. Gregg Cherry, who later became governor of North Carolina.
Note the horizontal Thirtieth Infantry Division emblem on the carrying case.

The story about Davis, who died Friday in Greensboro, is recorded in V.O. Key’s important 1949 book “Southern Politics In State and Nation” – which at one time was required reading for anyone who aspired to understand Southern politics.
Key described Davis as a “whimsical reporter” for asking Cherry about a two-party system and reporting on Oct. 11, 1946 that the governor was “stunned by the subversive suggestion that North Carolina should have a two-party system.”
