R40 (New York City Subway car) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The R40 (sometimes referred to as R40 Slant to distinguish it from the later R40M) is a New York Subway IND-BMT car, built in 1967-1969 by the St. Louis Car Company, St.
All R40 cars were later retrofitted with pantograph gates at the ends.
With the poorly conceived slant design, NYCTA had the last 100 R40 cars (R40M) built with a non-slant end similar to the R42.

 DCRP Review: Casio QV-R40
One of the other puzzling changes on the R40 is the removal of the diopter correction knob, which is used to focus what you're looking at.
On top of the R40, you'll find the power button as well as the shutter release button, which has the zoom controller around it.
As much as there is to like about the R40, there were many things that I did not care for.

 NYC Subway Cars: R40
NOTE: Due to the R40 and R40M cars having been renumbered, the photos indicate the car number when the photo was taken.
So some of the photos will show R40 and R40M cars with the same numbers, taken before and after the renumbering.
Where known, the original number of the car is indicated in the photo caption.

 PCWorld.com - IBM ThinkPad R40
The modular bay and easy-to-use keyboard are just the beginning: The 6.3-pound (not including power adapter) R40 is the first two-spindle ThinkPad you can order with a 15-inch screen and dual pointing devices (previously available only with the ThinkPad T series).
The R40 lacks IBM's proprietary USB 1.1 Ultraport on the top edge of the display, but that omission isn't much of a handicap as the port accepts only a handful of IBM devices, such as a basic digital camera.
The R40 does have the ThinkLight, a small LED that illuminates the keyboard somewhat in dark rooms.

The New York City Transit Authority found great dangers with the slant, with the lack of handholds for riders walking between cars, and the danger of the passenger falling onto the track.

IBM R40 Thinkpad - Computing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The R40 is no flagship for IBM, as it is endowed with adequate but not stunning specifications.
The R40 delivers a Sysmark score of 142 at a time when the higher-end machines are comfortably exceeding 200, and a 3Dmark of 1,464 when others are topping 4,000 with their 64MB graphics chipsets.
A further concession to the budget is the fact that the R40 is fitted with a CD-Rom drive rather than a DVD or combo drive.

You can configure the ThinkPad R40 to handle a variety of tasks: The modular bay accepts a multitude of hot-swappable optional devices, such as a secondary 40GB hard drive, a floppy drive, a secondary battery, a Zip drive, or a cradle for a numeric keypad or for IBM's PDA, the WorkPad C500 Series.
The R40 works with two optional docking stations, IBM's basic $179 Port Replicator II, which adds legacy ports and gigabit ethernet, and the $229 Mini Dock, which also adds its own power adapter, a four-port USB 2.0 hub, and a key lock.
In our speed tests, the R40 produced the sort of performance expected from a 1.3-GHz/400-MHz Pentium M-equipped notebook, turning in a PC WorldBench 4 score of 118--only about 5 percent behind the average for Pentium M notebooks with the faster 1.6-GHz/600-MHz processor.

The model I had from 2003 till June 2005 was the R40.
I've installed Linux on a couple of earlier ThinkPad models (the 390E and A21m) with little difficulty, but the R40 was trickier, since it came with Windows XP on an NTFS partition (as opposed to FAT32).

IBM's ThinkPad R40 Supports Multiple WLAN Technologies
The ThinkPad R40 comes in several versions, one of which is the first IBM notebook to integrate 802.11b and 802.11a wireless LAN technology.
There are also b-only models of the R40, as well as models that can be upgraded to support wireless technology later.
The R40 also features an antenna built into the display cover for optimal WLAN signal reception, as well as a utility manager that lets the notebook sense wired and WLAN connections and switch between them.

IBM ThinkPad R40 review by PC Magazine
The R40 is on the smaller side in this category, making it better suited for travel; unfortunately, as tested it lacks a wireless solution, something we think all notebooks should include.
The R40 is one of the few notebooks to have a USB 2.0 port conveniently located on the side (for plugging in peripherals) as well as one on the back.
The R40 had one of the highest Business Winstone scores among the notebooks with the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M, and an impressive battery life of 3 hours 8 minutes.

IBM ThinkPad R40 review by PC Magazine
The IBM ThinkPad R40 doesn't have the flash and cool design of other consumer notebooks here, nor does it bundle any fun multimedia software, but it does bring to the table impressive value and reliability.
Tied with the Acer unit as the lightest system, the R40 includes a 1.3-GHz Intel Pentium M processor, along with an integrated 802.11b Centrino wireless solution, which yielded less-than-desirable throughput.
The R40 isn't a multimedia machine, but it comes with a CD-RW drive and Veritas RecordNow, which is good enough for all your music-ripping and -burning needs.
